With Global Warming Picking Up Steam, I Decided To Revisit A Certain Movie

"The Day After Tomorrow" is excellent. The scientific information in the movie parallels some news reports that came out at the same time, for example, an ice berg the size of Rhode Island breaking off. I remember our "MSM" spinning that that was a natural phenomena, but the last time it happened was over 50 million years ago. What's natural about every 50 million years??? Just more spin from Pravda, I know. Also, the role of the President and Veep - obviosly modeled after bu$h & dick. It was also interesting that the "news" reports shown in the early part of the movie were "Fox News" reports, and after the reality of the climate shift hits, then other news outlets are shown - no more Faux News. In other words, as the administration tried to defend big business & ignore the impact of what was about to happen, Faux News was right there, spewing their crap, but after disaster hit, then the other news outlets reported what was actually happening. Anyway, I'm home sick today, so I plugged this movie in. I suggest DUers & others watch this great movie. I even remember how some theaters would not show it, for obvious reasons.

I lived in the DC area for fifteen years, and it really hit home

not bad at drawing most of the characters/relationships, unlike that dopey movie

really enjoyed that book, and the science seems pretty plausible, as well

but I'm a sucker for disaster movies. Especially cheesy ones.

is so tacked on and ridiculous I actually booed in the theater the first time I saw it.

Don't get me wrong I like "cheese" just not tacked on BS. Take for instance Lost World, I could deal with Jeff Goldblum's overacting and the ridiculousness that puts the group in danger (saving a baby T-rex) but when you have his daughter who got kicked off the gymnastics team execute a manuveur to save them from raptors, well that's when I lose my patience with Hollywood. You're talking to someone that thinks Flash Gordon(with the Queen soundtrack) is brilliant so its not a taste thing persay. Just a "you gotta be fucking kidding me" thing.

God's sake! That's an enormous release!

and REALLY get the goosebumps

It starred Craig T. Nelson. It's more than a decade old, and follows a family from Louisiana after their town is destroyed by a massive hurricane (!), as they make their way north hoping to seek refuge in Canada.

Ironically, many of the scenes were filmed in a town near New Orleans which was hit by Rita last year.

It's lower-key than "The Day After Tomorrow" without as many special effects (I think the most epic shots were of people crowded onto a barge going up-river from the Delta), but given that it was low-budget and computer animation wasn't as advanced in those days, it still managed to get the scope of the disaster across.

I saw it back in high school...it has the same message without the glossy, "summer blockbuster-ness" of Day after tomorrow
