You know, an American?

I'm hard working.

Conscientious and mindful.

Intelligent.

Won't ride a skateboard or any other device in the middle of traffic for fun.

I won't even dent other peoples' cars. I value my property and that of others' too.

LOYAL to the country that's happy to take me and treat me as part of a civilized country.

My country used to be a good country and treated hard working people right.

These days it only wants the poor as cheap labor; and anyone with any degree is seen as "overeducated". We're no longer a country. We're a cheap commodity with no loyalty or honor and you're damn right I'm sad to even post this thread.

1. Yankee go home..... ok, not really. I am glad that it wasn't you
who dented my car, and also that I didn't have to swerve to miss you on that skateboard last year... :)

stupidity of our people here at home, it's no small wonder that "stupid" and "indolent" are two of many reasons why we're losing jobs. Though the core issue is still senseless, evil greed (the Christian Bible says the same thing), don't get me wrong.

Especially when these brats should know better than to do such things - one day they'll piss off people who aren't pro-life and will in turn be squashed and you won't see me griving for them or their families.

But I do concede we have an education problem in this country and those people in power (and it's not limited to one side of the fence) are doing nothing to encourage Americans to go back to work. Their actions are condusive to the contrary.

7. Hi there!
Read my previous messages, you'll see I AM that positive about America. Surely my rants on immigration of the last 2 days have been enough?

But those mean nothing to you because, chances are, you might even agree with them. Only the current post, out of context, has value to you.

Welcome to DU, by the way. Enjoy your stay. :hi:

15. I stand corrected. But I will clarify one of my points:
"/hypotheticalsituation", as a coy misuse of HTML tag, meant "end of hypothetical situation". The / indicates "end of".

I wouldn't leave America and I do love it. If you want honest, sincere, level-headed communication please PM me. But please don't blindly and glibly say I don't like it. That's not fair to either of us.

23. Aw man! I was hoping for a real conversation.
Apparently not. Given the message was deleted, it's probably for the best. I only converse with humans who want to discuss making our good country better instead of worse. We haven't the time to bicker.

9. On the plus side, even Bush and his corporate lackeys are no different.
Not anymore.

So at least we die together.

I suppose I can find consolation in that. :(

6. No, My cousin went over to Germany two years ago. In Germany, in order
for you to work, you must get special authorization. Her husband got this permission because he was a Chiropractor (Which apparently they need). She on the other hand had a PHD and the only job she was permitted to do was a part time secretary position at a church.

One of the lessons to be learned by this, Germany takes care of it's citizens when it comes to jobs. Many other countries in Europe have similar polices from my understanding.

But you're in your 50s/60s and came from a generation where saving money was more valuable than spending on things like us Gen X'ers learned to do. At some point, your peers told the offspring to spend spend spend.

I learned my lesson. But all too many have not.

20. Please - tell me more. Perhaps some details?
I'm not ready to bail yet - but, frankly, it's not a bad idea to be ready for anything.

How would I - age 50+, MSc in C.S. - go about finding employment in the E.U.?

21. I'm kidding on leaving, I love it here too much. As for anywhere on Earth
you're wrong. Last I heard, India isn't taking any Americans.

I doubt China is either.

Or Russia.

Or any other country the US offshores to.

The only thing I know is many Republicans and Dems are equal on the viewpoint that offshoring has lowered product quality, morale of the citizens of the US, and the lower sticker price has translated to greater long term costs because of lowered product quality. Never mind the juicy political stuff such as the feeling of those countries' attitudes toward the US - which might be a reason why many products, even the more expensive ones, are still shoddily built. No quality. No loyalty for quality. No nothing. Empty. And that's sad.

17. "The Disposable American"
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/03/26/business/yourmoney/26lou.html?_r=4&oref=slogin&pagewanted=print&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

-- "The Disposable American: Layoffs and Their Consequences" by Louis Uchitelle, an economics writer for The New York Times. Knopf will publish the book on Tuesday.

JO GOODRUM, a thin, energetic woman older than her audience of aircraft mechanics — old enough, perhaps, to be their mother — got their attention with a single, unexpected sentence, which she inserted early in her presentation. Her husband, she said, had been laid off six times since the late 1980's. And yet here she was, standing before them, in one piece, cheerful, apparently O.K., giving survival instructions to the mechanics, who would be laid off themselves in 10 days.

They were, in nearly every case, family men in their 30's and 40's who had worked for United Airlines since the mid-1990's. Summoned by their union, they had gathered in the carpeted conference room at the Days Inn next to Indianapolis International Airport, not far from United's giant maintenance center, a building so big that 12 airliners could be overhauled in it simultaneously. That no longer happened. Most of the repair bays were empty. The airline was cutting back operations, and the 60 mechanics at the meeting were in the fourth group to be let go. --

22. Oh, I think there are still a few places that will take Americans....
I've heard that Ireland is a good place to live. You can get a residency permit + a work permit fairly easily (?)

Portugal is another place, my friends have told me about Argentina, Chile. My neighbor went to Costa Rica on a vacation, he swears he'll move there permanently.

New Zealand would be another possibililty, but I've heard it's tough to get a residency permit.

Sweden is a great place, but the door is closing on immigration.
