Josh Marshall has fun with The Kaloogian Deception (mentions DU)
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2006_03_26.php#008026

Okay, this is good for a laugh on a slow news night.

(And just to be clear, I'm a little late to this party. Will Bunch, a diarist at Kos's site and another at DU are already all over it.)

Howard Kaloogian, one of the wingers trying to replace Duke Cunningham out in San Diego, has this picture of Baghdad that he took on a recent trip to Iraq posted on his campaign website.

With the picture Kaloogian writes: "We took this photo of dowtown Baghdad while we were in Iraq. Iraq (including Baghdad) is much more calm and stable than what many people believe it to be. But, each day the news media finds any violence occurring in the country and screams and shouts about it - in part because many journalists are opposed to the U.S. effort to fight terrorism."

But is that really Baghdad?...

1. It would be a really bizarre lie to tell if it is a lie
I mean that doesn't mean it's not possible - just wierd.

6. It's a lie.
The photo is of a suburb of Istanbul. Kos has debunked the it's Baghdad claim by posting another picture of the same street in Turkey.

17. Link?
I've seen a picture of another street with a similar looking cab and porta potty but don't consider that to be hard enough evidence.

23. It's from a member of the dkos community.
Kaloogian is now admitting that it's a photo of "Istanbul." He's blaming his Web master for posting it.

5. And Josh Marshall's follow-up is "Busted!"

Busted!

There are some moments when collaborative journalism really does shine.

A commenter at Kos seems to have found the conclusive evidence that Howard Kaloogian's photograph of "Baghdad" is in a suburb of Istanbul.

 Kaloogian's site is currently not responding when accessed.

Only his home page comes up. http://www.kaloogianforcongress.com
All the rest of the links are currently down

walking in a pink tank top should have been the first clue that wasn't Baghdad.

Women in Iraq don't have that liberty anymore.

13. Kaloogian's "TRUTH TOUR": "Progress in Iraq" means Istanbul is Baghdad.
The deceitfully captioned photo was displayed on Kaloogian's Web site as part of his Orwellian-named "Truth Tour."

Of course, what do you expect from the crowd that says Osama = Saddam, Iraq = al Qaeda, etc., etc.

FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

20. Josh is wondering how Kaloog could be so stupid
My bet is, he only saw the Green Zone and doesn't have any pictures of real Baghdad, so he thought he'd pull one over on the gullible. It would be fun to see if he actually has ANY pictures of Baghdad that don't have military mess tents and the like in the foreground.
