Repuke framing of abortion...
Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 01:06 PM by harpo
If you follow the framing of the repukes on this topic, here are things you should avoid and make them fix before your conversation gets too far.

1. Pro-abortion - they love this term...helps demonize you from the start. People should stop the discussion and explain the difference between being PRO-CHOICE and pro-abortion.

2. abortion as birth control - they like to think that women use abortion so they don't have to use condoms or take a pill or be responsible in any form or fashion for them not having a baby. They don't understand that SHIT HAPPENS.

3. Murderer - we are killers because we kill fetus but they are christians becuase they are killing Iraqi's. This whole argument about abortion is bad but war is good...it is screwed up.

I'm just sharing ones I have heard...I always make them stop the conversation and get the terminology right before I'll sit and have a good/real debate on something. Make them clean up their discussion points if you can :)

1. I tell people that if I were a magician I would make abortion go away, but
it wouldn't be first on my list. I would start with child abuse and poverty. But, alas, I am not magic and making it illegal won't make it go away it will only make it unsafe.

2. Don't you just love getting lectures on...
responsibility from the irresponsibility party?
Then you have the lectures from RW men who assume that women don't think before getting an abortion but do it impulsively, because that's what they would do. Arghh!

3. I've heard that first meme a lot
and usually from right wingers who actually consider themselves pro abortion. Explore that one a little more and you'll discover that they're generally males who think the poor, put upon male who is liable for child support because he whined and refused to wear a condom now has the right to decide what happens to the woman's body he's damaged with an unwanted pregnancy.

They aren't against abortion. They're against not being in control of it.

6. The thing that gets me the most about the whole thing from both sides
is not that it is for or against...it's about government control. Once it occurs to these bozos that they have handed the Government control, EVERYONE has lost. Government can change its mind. Somewhere down the road, Government just might be forcing abortions and these people will have only themselves to blame.

7. Why is there intense advertising around here for DNA testing?
A handy dandy question down here in South Mississippi relative to any chitchat about abortion. Does your daughter need to find out who her baby's daddy is? Their house is so filthy they have given up trying to clean it and have decided that their neighbor's house needs some work. It really sucks being an ignorant "christian conservative" in America today.

8. The problem is...some of us ARE pro-abortion
When abortion is the best available option. Sometimes carrying the pregancy to term is the WORST option for the people involved. But it is not my judgment to make until it happens to me or my teenage daughter.

If the woman, her family, her doctor, et al, agree that termination is the best option, who am I to argue? I'm all for it.

I don't know if that muddies the waters...but at least I'm honest about it. I don't understand the people who say "nobody wants abortion." Sometimes it's the right choice, and it needs to be available for those times.

How about this: I wish it was the right choice less often than it is now, because of better policies, family planning, child care, etc.

10. I disagree on only a couple of particulars...
I don't think the woman's family should have any say in the matter unless she invites them into the process. I don't think the doctor should have any say either. The doctor should just provide the service requested and keep their opinion to themself. The only person who has to "agree" that termination is the best option is the pregnant person.
