Has anyone here given up Salon subscription? If so why...if you still
have one why? I was surprised the Abu Graeb photos got so little attention on there...but by that time I was only taking their Day Passes feeling Salon long ago left the left and was but a shadow of their former selves...breaking little in new news for Progressives or even Mainstream.

Any thoughts? Anyone remember Salon's GLORY DAYS, too?

1. I used to read, waaaay waaaay back in the early days ...
... in fact, I think that might be how I found DU.

Notsomuch around 2002-03 ... and haven't been there at all since '04.

:hi:

2. Guess that's me.
I gave up my salon subscription not because of any particular disappointment with the site, but merely because of a downturn in my personal finances and a need to economize. I still frequent the site using day passes.

I hadn't thought about any loss of quality investigative reporting, or loss of strength of the site generally until you mentioned it.

Now that you have mentioned it, I'll have to think about it. It is still worth reading in my opinion, but perhaps it had indeed deteriorated from its former self.

3. The Abu Graib photos have been on the Salon front page for over a week.
And it's still there:
http://www.salon.com/news/abu_ghraib/2006/03/14/introduction/

And this is at the top of the front page now:

"Big Steve" and Abu Ghraib

Salon has uncovered more allegations against a civilian interrogator accused of abuse at the prison. Why has he never been prosecuted?

By Mark Benjamin and Michael Scherer

The man known as "Big Steve" did not attend the court-martial this month of Sgt. Michael J. Smith, an Army dog handler at Abu Ghraib. But no one could miss his looming presence in the courtroom. According to both the prosecution and defense, "Big Steve" was deeply involved in the abuse committed by Smith, who was convicted March 21 for using his dog to terrify prisoners.

Day passes give you the same access as subscriptions. When was the last time you went there?

4. I just let my subscription lapse.
But will probably renew it eventually. Or not.

5. Mine has lapsed...
...but as soon as I get some spare change, I'll renew. I found this place due to Salon, and still think they do some quality material.

6. My sub runs out in May. Won't be renewing.
Tabletalk went downhill fast a couple years ago, and I really don't care for Cary Tennis' mental meanderings. I dislike Annie Lamott with a burning hatred, when they combined Mothers Who Think and Sex into Life, they gutted both, and Broadsheet offends me on SO many levels....

7. Salon visits are very rare now and I used to go there first thing every
morning. But Salon has been replaced by Raw Story, DU, democrats.com, Buzz Flash, Common Dreams, Truthout, ...
Well you get the idea.

8. I agree totally.. I used to go to Salon several times a day....Now,
Now, it doesn't seem to matter if I check in only weekly....I had concerns when the change in editors/management occurred and seems with good reason. Then the redesign that didn't seem very effective.

I want to give the kudos for their Abu G posts, but $$ is tight and I just can't justify spending on something I won't get maximal benefit from.

9. I recently renewed, but I'm kinda sorry I did
They do have some good Conason and Blumenthal columns, but nothing like the glory days when they outed Henry Hyde, complete with that picture of Henry with his girlfriend on his lap, in his "youthful indiscretion" period.
