4. According to this he declined to meet with her..posted on DU

Ms. Rice had wanted to meet Paul McCartney while she was here. But he declined the invitation, and so Ms. Rice visited the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts, where the former Beatle, and now Sir Paul, was once a student. She listened to a brief choral presentation in the Paul McCartney theater. Half-a-dozen students, with the school director's permission, lined up just inside the school's front door and stood with arms crossed over black T-shirts that read: "No torture. No compromise."

14. Do you honestly think that she cares? She's gotten everything she
has wanted and is doing her job for her fellow sociopaths very well.

I get ill btw when she is mentioned for the Republican nomination for 2008. I cannot even believe that this lying murderer was confirmed as Secy of State.

9. I don't know if he refused, but don't condemn him if.....
he does. He has always liked meeting with politicians. And in recent years, he meets with them to discuss his own agenda, as he did with Putin in Moscow. Guarantee you,if Paul meets with Condi, it will be to air his displeasure with the war.

Edited on Sun Apr-02-06 09:37 AM by mrfrapp
From the article:

"Ms. Rice had wanted to meet Paul McCartney while she was here. But he declined the invitation, and so Ms. Rice visited the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts, where the former Beatle, and now Sir Paul, was once a student"

Paul McCartney was never a student at the Liverpool Institue for the Performing Arts. McCartney founded the institution along with George Martin. He did however attend the now defunct grammer school, the Liverpool Institute for Boys which occupied the same building but that would have been a very different experience for the students.

If either Rice or The New York Times think that McCartney spent his formative years at LIPA or anything like it then they're deluded.

11. according to Sir Paul....
You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
all right, all right

You say you got a real solution
Well, you know
We'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well, you know
We're doing what we can
But when you want money
for people with minds that hate
All I can tell is brother you have to wait
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
all right, all right
Ah

ah, ah, ah, ah, ah...

You say you'll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well, you know
You better free you mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao
You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
all right, all right
all right, all right, all right
all right, all right, all right

15. Unfortunately,
this was also written by Sir Paul, in the wake of 9/11.

Massive Beatles fan here, but seriously, gag me with a spoon.

"Talking About Freedom"

This Is My Right
Right Given By God
To Live A Free Life
To live in freedom

Talking About Freedom
Talking About Freedom
I Will Fight For The Right To Live In Freedom

Anyone Tried It To Take It Away
Will Have To Answer
Because This Is My Right

Talking About Freedom
Talking About Freedom
I Will Fight For The Right To Live In Freedom

I'm Talking About Freedom
I'm Talking About Freedom
I Will Fight For The Right To Live In Freedom

Eveybody's Talking About Freedom
We're Talking About Freedom
I Will Fight For The Right To Live In Freedom
To Live In Freedom

Oh

Talking About Freedom
Talking About Freedom
I Will Fight For Right To Live In Freedom
To Live In Freedom

Talking About Freedom
Talking About Freedom
We Will Fight For Right To Live in Freedom
To Live In Freedom

but they weren't meant to. Seriously, this came out about three seconds after 9/11.

And political freedoms aren't "given by God". Not in the mind of anyone sane anyway.

"Vaffanculo" to anyone who says otherwise. :)

34. Here's what he said about it
“Freedom” was written post-9/11. Immediately post-9/11. And I wasn’t talking of a military response. I meant it like it’s civil rights. I will fight for the right, I meant. I’ll argue, I’ll shout, I’ll complain, I’ll vote. I don’t mean I’ll punch you in the face … but unfortunately that kind of meaning did get a little hijacked. I think President Bush had a lot to do with that. He talks about freedom, but it’s not the same kind of freedom I’m talking about.

Actually, it’s so unfortunate because it’s like … I’m not sure I’m going to do that song on my new tour, but I’d love to because I know what it means. But there is this doubt now as to how it will be taken. Is this just supporting any future military effort in Britain or the U.S.? That, I think, clouds the original meaning. When you sing “we shall overcome,” you don’t mean “we will overpower.”

39. Interesting indeed
Macca seems to be on the right side of the issue now, but that song is definitely ill-considered to say the least. He admits that he was a little caught up in the hysteria of the time, and certainly any intelligent person who was in their right mind would leave "God" right out of it, given the sensitivities involved.

It's a shame that the American right-wing has reduced the word "freedom" to something on a par with "truthiness" - a barely concealed code for a simple-minded, jingoistic bullshit worldview - and McCartney seems to feel the same way. Freedomlicious (TM) Freegasms (TM) of Freedomosity (TM), as they might say on whitehouse.org.

The main problem with the song is that he obviously rushed it out, so it sounds like he wrote it as he went along; I mean, those are just some really crappy lyrics. They sound like a 12-year-old that's just discovered Bob Dylan.

Just asking. Since I live there, I'd like to know how my life has changed because I haven't noticed a difference since Sept. 11, 2001.
