C-5 crashes shortly after take off at dover

Stewart Airport - Yesterday's crash of a huge C-5 military cargo plane in Delaware echoed here in the Hudson Valley.

That's because 13 of the giant planes - the military's largest - are stationed here at Stewart Air National Guard Base, where they launch for cargo missions all over the world.

Yesterday's crash occurred shortly after takeoff from Dover Air Force Base. The 247-foot-long plane broke apart upon impact, but none of the 17 people aboard suffered life-threatening injuries.

"It's a miracle. It's absolutely a miracle," said Lt. Col. Mark Ruse, commander of Dover's 436th Air Wing Civil Engineering Division.

1. C-5s have been problematic.
I've heard personal acounts of serious, repeated problems. Stories like a trip being started, but then returned to the airport when an engine caught fire. (Person I trust telling me this looked out a window and saw the flames.) Plane returned to base, they loaded their gear onto another C-5, took off, and then returned because one of ITS engines caught fire.

Unclear, in those stories, if the problems were shoddy maintenance or something more fundamental. But problems with the C-5 seem chronic. I've not heard similar stories regarding C-141s or C-17s.
