Iraqi widows feel lost in land that cannot provide
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/BAB438952.htm

MOSUL, Iraq, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Three sewing machines in a dingy apartment were all Munna Abdul Adeem Ahmed could scrape together when she set up a tailoring co-op for poor widows. She soon realised it was not enough.

More than 1,000 women from the northern city of Mosul turned up looking for work on the first day. Ahmed finally stopped registering new names after the 1,200th widow signed up.

The women were mostly young, poor and desperate for work. Many lost their spouses during the wars, uprisings and civil conflict that have bedevilled Iraq over the past 25 years.

Now, a raging insurgency is adding to their numbers.

Behind the daily bloodshed and attacks that make headlines across the world, there is a growing population of widows.

9. Overlooked?
Were you here then? Do you think people here didn't care?

And the widows of 9/11 don't have to scrounge for jobs that aren't there or walk through a war zone to get to it. They all got large settlements.

That doesn't make their grief easier, it does make their day to day life easier, caring for their children easier.

But why even bring them up in response to this post? The widows od 9/11 and Iraq are not related by time, by event or the situation.

Very odd response.

10. Far from true
Edited on Sun Jan-08-06 09:24 PM by shraby
the widow of 9/11 had the sympathy of the world when that happened. The pocketbooks were opened and noone could replace the family member they lost, but lavish compensations were provided.
Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11. According to the government, it was Saudi perps who put those planes into the towers, the pentagon and the field in PA.
The Iraqi widows are the victims of an egomaniacal American president and now many have no husband, many have lost their children and many have no homes, not to mention the lack of amenities such as electricity, potable water or adequate sewage disposal.
You had better start reading and put the blame where it belongs.

8. I did post the situation of the 9/11 widows here. You must of missed it?
http://archives.cnn.com/2001/US/12/20/rec.victims.compensation/

Victims' families to get average of $1.5 million

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Families of victims of the September 11 attacks will receive, on average, about $1.5 million from government and other sources -- excluding charities -- under regulations announced Thursday by the Justice Department.

The range will be from $300,000 to families of single people earning as little as $10,000 per year to as much as $3 million for top-earners with large families.

Kenneth Feinberg, the special master appointed by the attorney general, reported the "interim final rule" Thursday afternoon at the Justice Department.

"It is our view that, absent extraordinary circumstances, awards in excess of $3 million, tax-free, will rarely be appropriate in light of individual needs and resources," Feinberg's 76-page report said.

"At the same time, we want to ensure that victims' families are receiving at least a minimum level of resources to help meet their needs and rebuild their lives.

11. There were lots of posts about 9/11 widows on this board
Why the WTC trade center tragedy erases this tragedy is something most thinking people would not accept. This is a very legitimate issue that deserves attention.
