Obey says tribe donated cash before Abramoff represented it
From the Journal Sentinel
Posted: Jan. 5, 2006
U.S. Rep. Dave Obey (D-Wis.) said Thursday that campaign donations from the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians of California were made to him before convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff represented the tribe.

Campaign records show Obey received a $1,000 donation from the tribe on Feb. 22, 2002. Abramoff registered as a lobbyist for the Agua Caliente tribe on July 6, 2002. Obey also received $2,000 from the same tribe in earlier years.

"I've never met Abramoff in my life," Obey said. "I wouldn't know him if I fell over him. We certainly don't stand for the same things politically in any way."

Abramoff pleaded guilty this week to defrauding his Indian clients, conspiring to bribe members of Congress and tax evasion. That prompted a wave of lawmakers to divest their campaign accounts of donations from Abramoff and, in some cases, from his clients.

1. Obey is a national treasure.
His influence and respect for him go far beyond his immediate constituency.

2. He represents the tribes in his own state so it is not
unusual for him to receive donations from other tribes interested int the same issues. I cannot see him selling out for a measly $2000.00. If they were bribing him it would have been much more.
