Editor & Publisher: Coulter Is Paid $32,000 to Give 30-Minute Speech at College
By E&P Staff
Published: April 06, 2006

....The Gainesville (Fla.) Sun, in a story about Coulter's Wednesday appearance at the University of Florida, noted that UF's student-run speaker's bureau shelled out $32,000 of its $370,000 annual budget to bring Coulter to campus. The $32,000 includes her speaking fee, travel, and lodging....

***

Jeff Adelson's Thursday story added: "In response to a question about whether Islamic beliefs could be problematic in the creation of an Iraqi democracy, Coulter repeated what has become perhaps her most controversial comment. 'We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity,' she wrote shortly after Sept. 11."...

***

And Coulter told the UF audience that "a college campus is the last place you should send someone to teach them American values."

In her latest column, posted Thursday on AnnCoulter.com, the commentator also questioned the patriotism of people who don't share her Republican views. "If only liberals were half as angry at the people who flew planes into our skyscrapers as they are with Tom DeLay, we might have two patriotic parties in this country," she wrote. Coulter added that she can't "figure out what crime against God and man Tom DeLay is even alleged to have committed."

Coulter also alleged that the highly profitable Halliburton "is currently losing money in Iraq in order to supply food to our troops."...

How do you find lunatics with nothing but cash they want to hand out, now that Delay and Abramoff are gone?

I mean, do you walk up to somebody and ask, "Complete this sentence: a ____ and his money are soon parted" and if he can't answer, just fleece him?

Why would anyone want to hear someone spewing the putrid and vile exudate that comes from Coulter's mouth?

In all honesty, I would want no part of someone from the left that was simply limited to hatred of the "right"

8. I don't understand why she cant figure it out. Is she that stupid?
"she can't "figure out what crime against God and man Tom DeLay is even alleged to have committed.""

Hmm, a little bit of reading even biased newspapers and magazines would tell her what crimes he "alleged to have committed". A little bit of viewing even biased TV networks would tell her the same.

You go to college to learn. What better way to learn than to listen to extremists? College shouldn't be an echo chamber. Gives them something to talk about, discuss, argue over. Her fees don't seem out of whack with other lectures. And next week is Margaret Cho? I commend them for getting thought-provoking folks.

one of the top 50 schools in the country as decided by The Association of American Universities (AAU), No racist nicknames. No moron politico, uneducated, football players for presidents. No religion spouting football coaches quoted as "praying for a misdemeanor" for a player so he could remain elgible.... like me to go on....

Hey, Let's count National Merit Scholars, semi. Or basketball wins........

That's just some of what one can expect at Florida....in addition to campus being full of diverse ideas even if they're ideas of right wing, racist morons.

24. I think student run speaker's bureaus make it a point to out shock
each other by booking controversial speakers for outrageous fees. It's the same with the student run newspapers. They get automatic funding from the student activity fee (which the students have no say in) and there really is no oversight. Any attempt at control is met by cries of free speech and censorship. On the other hand, if they don't raise controversy from time to time, they feel disappointed and ignored.(They were the same way thirty years ago. I can remember when the editors of University of Buffalo's Spectrum felt so very shocking and cool when one of their December issues features a front page picture of the Nativity with a Raggedy Ann doll substituted for the Christ Child.)

It's an excellent way for the school administrators to get the troublemakers out of their hair by giving them their own little kingdoms to run.

The Re:puke:s were Mary Matlin and Annthrax.

28. I really think you're giving the speaker's bureau too much credit.
I don't think they really know who these speakers are beyond the fact that they'll irritate people. If they could get Hannibal Lecter, they'd book him in a minute. (I'm not certain that some of these students would realize he's a fictional character.)

30. As someone who is working to pay to put six kids through college,
(I know, it's my own fault, but they were really cute when they were little) I have a personal grudge against student fees of any kind. It's a way of disguising tuition hikes, IMO. Where does all this money go anyways, and who decided that it was needed? Right now some of my kids are being charged a $200 a semester Athletic activity fee that goes mostly for a football team that most of the students aren't really interested in because someone decided that the school needed a football team to attract alumni donations.

I really shouldn't be so cranky- some of the speakers the kids have seen have been pretty decent. It's just that it's such a crap shoot year to year how the money gets spent.

who could come to campus and give a speech that was entertaining and still be based around logic and respectful discourse.

The fact that they invite someone like Coulter indicates that it's more about hosting an event only slightly above a professional wrestling match vs. actually advancing any sense of learning and thought.
