WalMart and Brokeback Mt. Freeps are having fits!
Wal-Mart has begun selling the DVD of Ang Lee's gay cowboy flick this week, despite vehement protests from the ultraconservative American Family Association.

1. Just another case of profit winning out over principles for Wal-Mart!

5. Or is it?
I could make just as good a case the Walmart is distancing themselves from the fundies just like the GOP is.

10. Well, Harry Potter and Walk the Line were released around Turkey Day
and they were on the DVD shelves no later than last month.

Movies (including the big releases) are coming out on DVD a lot sooner these days.

I'm sure there are several reasons for the quick turnaround. I would think one major one is that people are forsaking the theaters for watching at their homes. As a result, the companies are releasing the DVD's shortly after the theater run is over. This way the movie is still relatively fresh in people's minds.

14. yes, less marketing required
and the Studio makes more off a DVD than a theater ticket.

11. Went to Blockbuster in Red State AZ, Brokeback copies all gone
I believe there are so many closeted Brokeback people that wanted to see the movie but did not feel comfortable going to a movie theater. More people will rent or buy it than saw it on screen. The fear and pressure of American society has kept the curious underground but with video they can now see the flick. There were about 50 copies at the Blockbuster, not one was left. It will be interesting to see the figures for movie rentals....
