DETROIT - A 5-year-old boy called 911 to report that his mother had collapsed in their apartment, but an operator told him he should not be playing on the phone, and she died before help arrived.

The family of Sherrill Turner, 46, does not know whether a swifter response could have saved her life, but relatives want to know why the operator apparently treated the call as if it were a prank.

Police said the 911 response was under investigation.

Turner's son, Robert, placed two calls to 911 after his mother collapsed Feb. 20 on the kitchen floor. During one of the calls, an operator said: "You shouldn't be playing on the phone."

1. Those operators can't make that kind of judgment call.
If they get a call that Godzilla is rampaging the downtown area they need to send somebody to respond. It's the cops who will deal with any inappropriate behavior with the 911 call system.

2. I couldn't believe this.
This woman let the boy's mother die and never tried to help. She will be "disciplined but not fired" due to her years of seniority.

3. My wife passed this story to me
while I was in the bathtub. I'm horrified by this...the poor kid. That 911 operator obviously hasn't been paying attention...children are taught to call 911 in an emergency, and it's saved lives in the past.

4. I work in child social services. We treat every allegation as true and
send it on to be investigated--even when we believe the child is lying.

5. If the child had been believed and the mother saved
it would have been on the six-o-clock news featuring the heroic 5 year old.

Instead, the kid is likely scarred for life.

Good call, lady.

6. Similar thing happened to me when I was a kid.
Long story, my stepfather was on a murderous rampage trying to break into the house to kill my mother. I called the police (pre-911, 30 years ago) four times and no one came, I was told on the last call that I shouldn't be making prank calls. Finally my mom, who was trying to keep him from getting in, had to place the call herself.

Thankfully, the police got there just as he broke our front door down, knife in hand.
