In "The Death of Feminism" author Phyllis Chesler criticizes liberal feminists for not speaking out against Islamic terrorism. The author recounts being held as a hostage in Afghanistan and details what she views as the overlooked issue of dehumanization of Muslim women in the Middle East. This event was hosted by Barnes & Noble Booksellers in New York City.

Phyllis Chesler is the author of "Women and Madness," "Letters to a Young Feminist" "Woman's Inhumanity to Woman" and "The New Anti-Semitism." Author Shelby Steele, research fellow at the Hoover Institution, will be our guest on In Depth on Sunday, April 2nd, beginning at Noon ET. Mr. Steele’s first two books, "The Content of Our Character: A New Vision of Race in America" and "A Dream Deferred: The Second Betrayal of Black Freedom in America," discussed race and race-related social programs in America. His latest, "White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era," will be published in May. The guy seems to blame liberals for trying to help blacks with Affirmative Action. He's just another in a growing number of black (actually mixed, as his mom is white) conservatives capitalizing on the opportunity of the networks penchant for hiring black conservatives who denigrate all things liberal, and often the chances for their own race.

One thing he puts forward is the idea that we liberals only think that blacks succeed by affirmative action, which couldn't be further from the truth. It is true that Republicans have tried hard to promote that misconception, and often do believe this canard themselves. Any liberal will realize that people like Colen Powell made it where they did by hard work, and having the opportunity to work in a balanced workplace, which liberals provided. He deserves everything that comes to him, just like anyone else who has benefitted from the balance affirmative action provides along with their own hard work.

Some of his views on blacks were pretty right-on about some pitfalls that they fall in to. Think Bill Cosby's recent statements to get an idea of where that is coming from.

2006 Virginia Festival of the Book: Climate Change and Global Warming

From the 2006 Virginia Festival of the Book in Charlottesville, a panel discussion on weather and climate changes throughout history. Tim Flannery, author of "The Weather Makers," is joined by Elizabeth Kolbert, author of "Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change," and William Ruddiman, author of "Plows, Plagues, and Petroleum: How Humans Took Control of Climate." The panel is moderated by Fred Damon, the editor of "On The Order Of Chaos: Social Anthropology And The Science Of Chaos."

Tim Flannery is the director of the South Australian Museum and an Affiliate Professor at the University of Adelaide. Elizabeth Kolbert has worked for The New York Times and the New Yorker and is the author of "The Prophet of Love : And Other Tales of Power and Deceit." William Ruddiman is a professor at the University of Virginia has published over 100 papers and one textbook for college level students on the history of the Earth's climate.

2006 Virginia Festival of the Book: Flags

Authors Marc Leepson and John Coski detail the history of both the American flag and the Confederate battle flag at the 2006 Virginia Festival of the Book in Charlottesville. Marc Leepson is the author of "Flag: An American Biography" and John Coski's latest book is entitled "The Confederate Battle Flag: America's Most Embattled Emblem."

Marc Leepson has written for the New York Times, Smithsonian, and The Washington Post. He is the author of "Saving Monticello : The Levy Family's Epic Quest to Rescue the House that Jefferson Built." John Coski is historian and director of library and research at the Museum of the Confederacy. He is the author of "Capital Navy: The Men, Ships, and Operations of the James River Squadron."

2006 Virginia Festival of the Book: John Hope Franklin and Rita Dove

From the 2006 Virginia Festival of the Book in Charlottesville, a discussion on cultural history with John Hope Frankin and Rita Dove. Mr. Franklin's autobiography is entitled 'Mirror to America" and "American Smooth" is Rita Dove's latest collection of poetry. The event is moderated by Robert Vaughan, the president of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.

John Hope Franklin is the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of History at Duke University. He is the author of "The Emancipation Proclamation," "The Militant South" "The Free Negro in North Carolina," "Reconstruction After the Civil War," "A Southern Odyssey: Travelers in the Ante-bellum North," and "From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African-Americans." His current research deals with "Dissidents on the Plantation: Runaway Slaves." Rita Dove is Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and Poet Laureate of the Commonwealth of Virginia. She served as Poet Laureate of the United States and Consultant to the Library of Congress from 1993 to 1995. She is the author of "The Yellow House on the Corner," "Museum," "Thomas and Beulah," "On the Bus with Rosa Parks," a book of short stories, "Fifth Sunday," and the play "The Darker Face of the Earth." She is the editor of "Best American Poetry" and her new poetry collection, "American Smooth,"was published by W.W. Norton & Company in September 2004.

Black in the White House
Ron Christie

Author Ron Christie speaks at the Nixon Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda, California about his new book “Black in the White House.” He provides an inside account of working for Vice President Cheney, for whom he worked from 2001 to 2002. After his term with the Vice President he began working for President George W. Bush as a Special Assistant to the President. Mr. Christie talks about the policymaking processes in the White House at the highest level, some of which he witnessed firsthand. The author also discusses the ways in which the Administration deals with the issues surrounding African-Americans and other minority groups in the United States.

From 2001 to 2002 Ron Christie served as deputy assistant to Vice President Dick Cheney for domestic policy and from 2002 to 2004 he served as Special Assistant to President George W. Bush for USA Freedom Corps. He is a frequent contributor to various programs on the Fox News Channel.

Waiting for Gautreaux: A Story of Segregation, Housing, and the Black Ghetto
Alexander Polikoff

Alexander Polikoff recounts the Chicago public housing suit brought on by black families seeking housing outside of the ghetto. In "Waiting for Geautreax" the author details the Gautreaux v. CHA and HUD case that he and his Chicago law firm colleagues argued in front of the Supreme Court. This event was hosted by 57th Street Books in Chicago, Ilinois.

Alexander Polikoff was the executive director of the Business and Professional People for the Public Interest law and policy center for 29 years. He is the author of "Housing the Poor: The Case for Heroism" and several articles on civil rights and urban affairs.

Blacked Out: Government Secrecy in the Information Age
Alasdair Roberts

Alasdair Roberts discusses his book, "Blacked Out," at Powell's City of Books in Portland, Oregon. During his speech, Professor Roberts comments on the recent increase in the enactment of freedom of information laws by governments around the world. He also talks about a number of issues that surround government secrecy that he believes will need to be addressed in the future, including the problem of "government pushback" (an effort reverse the trend in government transparency). He argues that this is happening in the United States today.

Getting America Right: The True Conservative Values Our Nation Needs Today
Edwin Feulner

Edwin Feulner, president of the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC argues that Americans need to reacquaint themselves with traditional conservative values. During his talk Mr. Feulner explains what these values are, and outlines a plan to restore them. He says that Americans should ask themselves six questions when deciding whether a policy should be supported. (1) Is it the government's business? 2) Does it promote self-reliance? 3) Is it responsible? 4) Does it make the country more prosperous? 5) Does it make us safer? 6) Does it unify us?). During the Q&A portion of this event, Mr. Feulner talks about the recent controversy over the Dubai ports deal and President Bush's immigration policy. This event was co-hosted by the Heritage Foundation and the Manhattan Institute in New York City.

Edwin Feulner has held many positions in government, including serving as a consultant to President Reagan and, most recently, as a consultant to the Gingrich-Mitchell Congressional Task Force on U.N. Mobsters, Unions, and Feds: The Mafia and the American Labor Movement
James Jacobs

James Jacobs looks at the infiltration of unions by the mob and the power that gives organized crime in large cities around the United States. Professor Jacobs argues that while the power of organized crime is a well-known open secret, it is treated as if it doesn't exist by scholars who write about government and power (he discusses the work of Robert Dahl and Robert Caro). He talks about the rare efforts by the federal government to crack down on the mob and the complacency that most people (including politicians) seem to have when it comes to the existence organized crime.

James Jacobs is the Chief Justice Warren E. Burger Professor of Constitutional Law and the Courts at New York University School of Law. He is the author of several books, including "Stateville: The Penitentiary in Mass Society," "Busting the Mob: United States v. Cosa Nostra," and "Gotham Unbound: How NYC Was Liberated From the Grip of Organized Crime."

Harriet McBryde Johnson was born with congenital neuromuscular disease and has never been able to walk. In her memoir "Too Late to Die Young" she recalls growing up in Charleston, South Carolina, her career as a civil rights attorney, the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990, and why she has protested over the Jerry Lewis muscular dystrophy telethon for thirteen years. This event was hosted by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC.

Harriet McBryde Johnson has practiced civil rights law in Charleston, South Carolina for over thirteen years. She served the City of Charleston Democratic Party for eleven years, first as secretary, then as chair and is a contributor to The New York Times Magazine.

Righteous Anger at the Wicked States: The Meaning of the Founders' Constitution
Calvin Johnson

Calvin Johnson chronicles the history of the U.S. Constitution in his book "Righteous Anger at the Wicked States." The author argues that the U.S. Constitution was adopted because of the Founding Fathers' anger at the states for their failure to pay the requisitions that would have helped pay off the Revolutionary War debt. This event was hosted by the Harvard Law School chapter of the American Constitution Society in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Ruff's War: A Navy Nurse on the Frontline in Iraq
Cheryl Ruff

In "Ruff's War," author Cheryl Ruff recounts her experience as a Naval nurse in Iraq. The book is a collaborative effort between Ms. Ruff and retired Navy nurse Sue Roper. During the event, Commander Ruff talks about the book and presents photos, which she took while stationed at various bases throughout Iraq, that show what life was like for her and her colleagues. Some of the photos are graphic in nature.

Cheryl Ruff is a certified nurse anesthetist at the Chesapeake Surgery Center in Virginia. Ms. Ruff enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1976 and served 122 days in Iraq in 2003. Sue Roper is the editor in chief of the NNCA News, the Navy Nurse Corps Association's official news magazine. Ms. Roper is a twenty-one-year veteran of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps.

2006 Virginia Festival of the Book: Amy Goodman, The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media That Love Them

From the 2006 Virginia Festival of the Book in Charlottesville Amy Goodman, host and executive producer at Pacifica Radio's Democracy Now, leads a discussion on "Independent Media in the Time of War." In her book, "The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media That Love Them." the author lists what she sees as human rights violations and calls for government accountability and media responsibility. Ms. Goodman recalls her personal experience in East Timor, where she witnessed what she describes as a massacre and describes being beaten by Indonesian soldiers while trying to make a documentary about the government in that country.

Amy Goodman is the host and executive producer of the national independent news program "Democracy Now." "The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media That Love Them, co-written with her brother, reporter David Goodman, is her first book.

Mark Crispin Miller argues that the outcome of the 2004 election, in many states including Ohio, was manipulated to favor George Bush and the Republican party. He discusses the evidence he has for this charge and talks about the reaction that Sen. John Kerry had when presented with the evidence. Professor Miller also argues that the Republican party has been taken over by religious fundamentalists who see their opponents as evil and whose ultimate goal is to bring about Armageddon. The talk was hosted by the University of Massachusetts - Amherst.

Fast Company magazine's Charles Fishman describes Wal-Mart as the most influential company in the world. In "The Wal-Mart Effect," the author researches the store's effect on suppliers, local retailers and the environment. Mr. Fishman argues that while consumers continue to benefit from lower prices, the turnover rate of Wal-Mart employees is extremely high and a significant amount of factory jobs have been sent overseas. This event was hosted by Books & Books in Coral Gables, Florida.

Charles Fishman is a senior writer at Fast Company magazine and won a Gerald Loeb Award for distinguished business journalism in 2005. In 2004 his story for Fast Company about Wal-Mart, "The Wal-Mart You Don’t Know," won best business magazine story of the year from the New York Press Club. His work has been featured in Best Business Stories of the Year.

Dallas Morning News photographers Michael Ainsworth, Melanie Burford, Barbara Davidson, Tom Fox, and Irwin Thompson participated in this panel discussion of their work documenting hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. During this illustrated program, the photographers use examples of images from the book to describe the difficulty of working in a disaster area. The photojournalists discuss people they met and photographed while on assignment, and how this experience compares to other major events they have photographed.

This book was produced by the Dallas Morning News newspaper. Nineteen staff photographers contributed over 250 images to this book.

Former Indiana congressman Andy Jacobs, Jr. takes a critical look at U.S. wartime presidents in his new book, "The 1600 Killers." The author argues that since the Korean War several U.S. presidents have entered combat illegally since they were started without the consent of Congress. During his presentation, Mr. Jacobs reads several passages from his book and answers questions from the audience. This event was hosted by Big Hat Books in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Andy Jacobs, Jr. (D-IN) served fifteen terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, retiring in 1997. He is the author of "Slander and Sweet Judgment: The Memoir of an Indiana Congressman," and "The Powell Affair." Mr. Jacobs currently has a law pratice in Indianapolis and teaches courses on American politics and the US Congress at Indiana-Purdue University.

Odyssey of an Eavesdropper: My Life in Electronic Countermeasures and My Battle Against the FBI
Martin Kaiser III

Martin Kaiser was indicted by the Justice Department on charges of illegal wiretapping and conspiracy after testifying before the National Wiretap Commission in 1975. In "Odyssey of an Eavesdropper," Mr. Kaiser, an electronic surveillance expert, recounts his career supplying eavesdropping devices to the FBI, CIA, and DEA. Martin Kaiser asserts that as a result of his testimony the FBI began a vendetta against him that damaged his business and triggered an emotional breakdown. This event was hosted by Brooklyn Central Library in New York.

Martin Kaiser is president of Martin L. Kaiser Inc., an electronics company. He served as a technical adviser on the films "The Conversation" and "Enemy of the State." While he was a senior research technician at RCA Laboratories in the late 1950s, he helped create a new link in the U.S. anti-missile system.
