IMPEACH HARRY REID! RUSS FOR MINORITY LEADER!
I'm so sick of this listless, weak-kneed group of leaders.

1. I'm so sick of these knee-jerk "Democrats have no spine" threads
Granted they have a long way to go before being a strong opposition party, but every time I see a non-substantial "Democrats aren't doing shit....kick out Pelosi and Reid" I want to scream!

23. Especially when echoing is how you win
If people keep echoing negativity, they shouldn't be surprised when it's all anyone hears.

We've got an Iraq Withdrawal plan. A 10-point or 7-point plan, similar enough to not matter. A censure investigation with most Democrats supporting. A defeated immigration policy. A rebuffed energy summit.

And people can't find anything to get behind? Interesting.

3. I don't think you can "impeach" a senator
Reid's tenure is between he and his constituents. If you mean he should step down as minority leader, I disagree.

9. Problem is, our choices for a replacement aren't so hot --
and besides, he's between elections at the moment. We're busy trying to decide which Dem we want to run against John Ensign . . .

I don't know why the Dems went with Reid. Durbin would have been awesome.

40. I'm unfamiliar with the actual process -- perhaps it has
something to do with how long they have served? Durbin is a 2nd term (or 3rd?) senator, Reid is a 4th term senator.

Or perhaps it has to do with the personality they think will work best in that position -- I think that these days people rarely agree with the "middle of the road" attitude, but the politicians still seem to be convinced that sort of conciliatory personality is best.

I would agree with their assessment IF the Dems were dealing with rational opponents -- but they're not.

4. I would like Russ as minority leader, too. But other senators have to
choose him. Didn't just two support Russ on censure?

Most are the play-it-safe type.

12. That's a good analogy... a Rabbit...
furry, soft and mild... hardly does anything, but can occasionally bite if provoked. Still, what we need is a bear (or other aggressive, powerful animal; symbolically, that is).

10. I think Reid is about as effective as he can be, considering
the awful DINO's some states keep electing to Congress.

I've been quite impressed with his parliamentary moves several times. He leaves Frist sitting in his dust looking confused.

16. He has on occasion made a smart play...
and it's true he does have to suffer with the DLC and other DINOs... but it just seems to leave me wanting--longing for strong, dramatic leadership. I keep imagining that with the right leader, Democrats might get their courage back (enough of the cowardly lion routine).

33. The art of opposition ...
Edited on Sat Apr-08-06 03:56 AM by RoyGBiv
Pay special attention to this paragraph, which means more than it says.

"If you read the press coverage of the story, you would have thought the issue surfaced on its own. In fact, however, the story was a little grenade rolled into the White House bunker by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.). No one was aware of the port deal until Schumer—who had been tipped off by a source in the shipping industry—held a press conference, and another, and another until the press corps finally paid attention. As for Schumer, he popped up in news reports about the deal, but almost always as a “critic of the administration,” not as the initiator of the entire episode."

A great deal of what makes the press is set in motion long before the press picks it up. It's not like any real journalism is taking place, the episode mentioned above being a prime example. That issue was thrust before an unsuspecting media in such a way that the White House had not laid out a game plan to counter it before it made headlines; thus, it actually made headlines, and Schumer is responsible for that. For all the hand-wringing we do about the state of the media in this country, you'd think we'd realize that, but I suppose such is not the case.

Harry Reid is doing a fine job. He's not an attack dog in the open most of the time. Behind the scenes, however, he and many of his colleagues are fighting hard and appearing on the surface as an opposition party generally does.

Democrats Vow Not To Give Up Hopelessness

February 27, 2006 | Issue 42•09

WASHINGTON, DC—In a press conference on the steps of the Capitol Monday, Congressional Democrats announced that, despite the scandals plaguing the Republican Party and widespread calls for change in Washington, their party will remain true to its hopeless direction.

"We are entirely capable of bungling this opportunity to regain control of the House and Senate and the trust of the American people," Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said to scattered applause. "It will take some doing, but we're in this for the long and pointless haul."
