Fans line up at Okinawa base bookstores to chat with ‘Gunny’

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Fans of famed former Marine R. Lee Ermey, aka “the Gunny,” stood in a long line that snaked through the aisles of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service Bookmark, waiting for hours to get Ermey’s signature on Sunday

Ermey was there to sign copies of his book “Mail Call,” named after his History Channel television show, but he was willing to sign anything fans asked. During the afternoon he signed copies of the show’s DVDs, copies of “Full Metal Jacket” — the Stanley Kubrick movie in which Ermey memorably played a tough drill instructor — and he even signed one fan’s Iraqi money.

1. I've never seen the attraction of this show.
I consider simply to be more pro-war corporate propaganda.

10. History Channel is owned by A&E Networks
A subsidiary of NBC, who is ultimately owned by GE, a serious player in the military industrial complex, who is directly benefitting from the illegal, immoral war in Iraq.

13. What isn't a stretch is what happened to THC
after 9/11. It used to be a decent cable channel that could show some good educational programming. After 9/11, it became (almost exclusively) an outlet for shows featuring military hardware and today's armed services.

14. Do you mean "TLC"?
And I agree.

The content did change for the worse, but I think that's due to consumer demand and not some ethereal guidance by a conglomerate of corporations.

15. No, I meant the History Channel.
Was it my use of the term "educational" that got you thinking I was referring to TLC?

22. THC = The Hitler Channel

All Hitler --- All the time.

:eyes:

Seems like they are always showing something about Hitler or the Third Reich.

23. Actually last night they had a good one on
The "Tiny Ice Age" Very entertaining and no mention of Hitler at all. They did mention Napoleon (and interestingly enough Stradivari.)

19. Really, why's that?
You don't find it odd that a subsidiary of GE,"we bring good things to war", decides to start glorifying war and the military right at the time that we're involved in an illegal, immoral war that is making GE millions upon millions of dollars. In addition to Mail Call, the History Channel also features other shows that glorify wars, including the current one. You really don't think that is a propaganda move directed by GE? Why, it seems obvious to me as the nose on my face. But then again, I've had several years of education and practical experience in how our national propagandists work.

Or do you simply dismiss the idea of propaganda in America, that it can't happen here? Wake up friend, because it does happen, on a minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day basis, 24/7.

3.  I like that guy
Sure his TV show is a bit hokey but he is the genuine article. He was great in FMJ and I've heard him on the radio and he is a big supporter of veterans causes - even puts on a golf tournament to raise money for it.

4. I'd like to see if he could sign a Norwegian Grey Rat
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 10:44 AM by YOY
After his work in the remake of the movie "Willard". He was even better in the music video for Crispin Glover singing "Ben".

Not to mention Peter Jackson's "The Frighteners"

I like the guy!

20. I read a great story about him regarding Full Metal Jacket.
Apparently, he was hired to train the actor that was to play the drill instructor. They made a video of him showing what a drill instructor might say and how he would say it. Kubrick watched the video and was impressed that he could curse for ten minutes and not repeat a word. He decided they didn't need to hire anyone to play the DI, they already had their guy!
