Because, though there IS lots of 'mutual combat' between couples:

*woman are on the receiving end of 'domestic violence' overwhelmingly more than men,

*men are stronger and can do much more damage,

*because woman often have children whose care would fall to the state if the women were sent to jail,

*the standard in the community is 'danger to self or others' for jail term consideration. Obviously, a violent man is often violent in other walks of life--with dates/parents/bosses.neighbors/road rage at sports etc.--a danger to the community. A woman who is 'domestically violent' may have a tendency to be violent in love matches, but not with her community as a whole,

*men use violence for control, women (mostly) use it for self-defense,

*because the women have done nothing criminally wrong and the men HAVE.

READ it, not the tv show. Unquestionably, Mrs. Hughes ultimately was the more violent of the two (hubby wound up dead, afterall). However, after you read the book, come back and tell us how 'mutual' you think the abuse truly was.

Everything I post today is getting misinterpreted (or just flamed outright) anyway, so what the hell!

It is because of the double standard, and the "macho" shit. Men run the system. Men are supposed to be able to stand up to women. If yo' bitch crosses you, men are supposed to be able to shut 'em down. Smack 'em if you gotta. The notion of a woman abusing her man is an anathema to everything we've been taught as men. Men abuse. Men are assholes. Men wear the wife-beater t-shirts and come home drunk and smack around their women.

If a woman does it to a man, it is because the man is a pussy. He can't defend himself.

Men are used to women "abusing" in totally different ways than men do. Women belittle, women cut off sex, women scream and yell. We're supposed to be able to take that. But women can also throw frying pans, lop off penises (Bobbitt, anyone?).

It is a horrible double standard. One of the really big ones which still exists in modern society. On one hand society has empowered women, but when they use that power we freak out. Be it through climbing over people on the way up the corporate latter, or whacking them in the head with a frying pan, we can't accept the notion of women being "stronger" than men.









So bring it on, bitches! (I'm kidding, of course. I hope my wife doesn't read this, or I'm dead meat!).
