"Jack has a relationship with the President" - Abramoff spokesman Scanlon
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 12:03 PM by StefanX
Bush says he "doesn't know Jack"? Nice try, Georgie...

Abramoff Was A Republican Insider And Who Had Strong Pull With Bush White House. Abramoff's lobbying partner boasted that he is a phone call away from the President. "Jack has a relationship with the President," Abramoff's former spokesman and fellow lobbyist Michael Scanlon once said. "He doesn't have a bat phone or anything, but if he wanted an appointment, he would have one." Scanlon has since pleaded guilty to conspiring to bribe a congressman and other public officials. (New Times Broward-Palm Beach, 2/22/01; Washington Post, 11/29/05)

Jack Abramoff Was A Bush/Cheney '04 Pioneer; Boasted How Easy It Was To Be A Pioneer. Abramoff raised over $100,000 for the Bush/Cheney re-election campaign, and was designated a "Pioneer" for his fundraising efforts. (International Herald Tribune, 7/22/03)

Abramoff's Pay-To-Play Program For White House Meetings Abramoff Arranged A White House Meeting With Bush And Administration Officials For Indian Leaders. (National Journal, 4/20/02)

Abramoff Arranged White House Meeting In Exchange For Donation To Grover Norquist's Americans For Tax Reform. (Newsweek, 5/2/05)

Abramoff Lobbying Team Had "Extensive Access" To Bush Administration Officials. (AP, 5/6/05)

So Scanlon was boasting about George's friend Abramoff?

Bush's friend Grover Norquist also claims that Abramoff was 'very close to Bush'.

18. Here's a report in the press about the 05-09-01 Meeting
that Bush was at but the WH denies:

June 8, 2005

Lovelin Poncho, who is stepping down after 20 years as Coushatta tribal chairman, recalled meeting with Bush for about 15 minutes, his attorney said. An itinerary said the meeting was in the Old Executive Office Building, next to the White House. Poncho recalls Abramoff also attended, said the lawyer, who spoke on condition he not be named.

The White House has no record of the Coushattas or Abramoff at the May 9, 2001, meeting, spokeswoman Erin Healy said. Records show representatives from the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas and the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana met with Bush, along with 21 state legislators, Healy said.

Officials for the Kickapoo and Chitimacha tribes didn't return calls seeking comment.

Bryant Rogers, an attorney for the Choctaws, said e-mails initially sent to the Choctaw tribe did not mention a White House meeting. Instead, Abramoff solicited the contribution as support for the ongoing anti-tax efforts of Americans for Tax Reform.

"The Choctaws contributed $25,000, viewing this as support for a general series of anti-tax meetings that (Americans for Tax Reform) had routinely sponsored. However, neither Chief Martin nor any other tribal representative was present at any of these meetings on May 9, and in particular didn't go to the White House meeting," Rogers said.

White House Admits President Met with Abramoff
May 6, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC – Amid new revelations about the extensive contacts between Jack Abramoff and the Bush administration, including at least one meeting with President Bush, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean reiterated his call for President Bush to return all the money that the scandal-plagued lobbyist raised for the President’s campaign fund.

Yesterday, a White House spokesperson acknowledged to the Associated Press that the President “had met on occasion” with Abramoff.

Of course, they might have met when Jack was on W's transitional committee in 2000!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/05/AR2006010501903.html
This careful judge of what it means to be an "honorable public servant" had reason to prefer the Bush administration's taste in appointees. After the 2000 election, Abramoff was named to the Bush transition team for the Interior Department, which regulates the Indian casinos that paid Abramoff his inflated fees.

25. of course they know each other
but they think putting KKKarl Rove and Grover Norquist as the go to contacts has insulated bush from direct connection.

I looked yesterday for a couple house trying to find a photo of them together (Abramoffs ego is too big for him not to have at least one) but so far no luck, a lot of sites where one would think they'd find photos appear to have been scrubbed.

29. White House told DOI to pay attention to Abramoff
http://www.indianz.com/News/2005/008834.asp

Monday, June 20, 2005

The White House told Interior Department political appointees that they "had to pay attention" to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, former Bureau of Indian Affairs official Wayne Smith says.

Up until he was fired, Smith handled gaming and land-into-trust issues as the BIA's second-in-command. He tells The Denver Post that the White House was concerned about Abramoff's connections to Republican and Christian activists like Ralph Reed and Focus on the Family leader James Dobson.

Doug Domenech, the White House's liaison to DOI, "said we had to pay attention to Abramoff, because otherwise the religious right and Reed are going to come up and bite us, and our whole base will go crazy," Smith told the paper. He said Domenech warned, "They will light up our phones, shut down our phone lines."

Smith said Italia Federeci, an associate of Norton's who runs a group called Republicans for Environmental Advocacy, called Domenech to relay Abramoff's messages. "Doug would come down and say, 'Italia called and Jack wants this,"' Smith said. "That's how it all happened internally."

31. here are a couple of articles regarding the rise of the
christo-fascists (my term):

Rise Of The Righteous Army

(CBS) Evangelical Christians form one of the most potent forces in American politics and society. They are people who place their faith, a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, above everything else in their lives and hope to spread that Gospel to the world.

An estimated 70 million Americans call themselves evangelicals, and their beliefs have already reshaped American politics. In the last election, 40 percent of the votes for George W. Bush came from their ranks, and now those beliefs are beginning to reshape the culture as well -- thanks to a group of best-selling novels known as the “Left Behind” series.

If you want to understand the people behind this political and cultural shift, the place to begin is in church. Correspondent Morley Safer reports.
”I don't think the media has really caught on to what's been going on in the last 30 years or so in America. An enormous number of people have come to faith in Christ and consider themselves evangelical Christians. And these are people that are buying, reading and distributing our books,” says Rev. Tim LaHaye.

LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins have written a series of runaway bestsellers known as the “Left Behind” novels. All together, there are 40 million books in print, and another 17 million in spin-offs. Plus, “The Kids” series, audio books and comic books are worth $100 million in annual revenue.

The books give a graphic version of the New Testament prophesy of the end of the world, happening in our time, in which only the righteous are saved. It’s a triumphant tale -- unmistakably Christian, undeniably American.

The Rise of the Religious Right in the Republican Party

Theocracy is derived from the two Greek words Qeo/j(Theos) meaning "God" and kra/tein (cratein) meaning "to rule." The Reverend Rod Parsley, a champion of theocracy, or what he calls a "christocracy," told his congregation at the World Harvest Church, located just outside Columbus, Ohio, "Theocracy means God is in control, and you are not." more

The theocratic right seeks to establish dominion, or control over society in the name of God. D. James Kennedy, Pastor of Coral Ridge Ministries, calls on his followers to exercise "godly domininion ... over every aspect ... of human society." At a "Reclaiming America for Christ" conference in February, 2005, Kennedy said:

Our job is to reclaim America for Christ, whatever the cost. As the vice regents of God, we are to exercise godly dominion and influence over our neighborhoods, our schools, our government, our literature and arts, our sports arenas, our entertainment media, our news media, our scientific endeavors -- in short, over every aspect and institution of human society.

Twenty-five years ago dominionists targeted the Republican Party as the vehicle through which they could advance their agenda. At the same time, a small group of Republican strategists targeted fundamentalist, Pentecostal and charismatic churches to expand the base of the Republican Party. This web site is not about traditional Republicans or conservative Christians. It is about the manipulation of people of a certain faith for political power. It is about the rise of dominionists in the U.S. federal government.

Today's hard right seeks total dominion. It's packing the courts and rigging the rules. The target is not the Democrats but democracy itself. more

It has a lot to do with the year 2000 also (jmho) - in that history has shown a rise in fundamentalism with the turn of one-thousand year periods - the rapture and endtimes crap that is spewed non-stop - Those folks need a reality check.

40. 64 FAILED END-OF-THE-WORLD PREDICTIONS BEFORE 1990
http://www.religioustolerance.org/end_wrl2.htm

excerpt:

Failed prophecies:
About 30 CE: The Christian Scriptures (New Testament), when interpreted literally, appear to record many predictions by Jeshua of Nazareth (Jesus Christ) that God's Kingdom would arrive within a very short period, or was actually in the process of arriving. For example, Jesus is recorded as saying in Matthew 16:28: "...there shall be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom." In Matthew 24:34, Yeshua is recorded as saying: "...This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled." Since the life expectancy in those days was little over 30 years, Jesus appears to have predicted his second coming sometime during the 1st century CE. It didn't happen. More details.
About 60 CE: Interpreting the Epistles of Paul of Tarsus literally, his writings seem to imply that Jesus would return and usher in a rapture during the lifetime of persons who were living in the middle of the 1st century. More details.
About 90 CE: Saint Clement 1 predicted that the world end would occur at any moment.
2nd Century CE: Prophets and Prophetesses of the Montanist movement predicted that Jesus would return sometime during their lifetime and establish the New Jerusalem in the city of Pepuza in Asia Minor.
365 CE: A man by the name of Hilary of Poitiers, announced that the end would happen that year. It didn't.
375 to 400 CE: Saint Martin of Tours, a student of Hilary, was convinced that the end would happen sometime before 400 CE.
500 CE: This was the first year-with-a-nice-round-number-panic. The antipope Hippolytus and an earlier Christian academic Sextus Julius Africanus had predicted Armageddon at about this year.
968 CE: An eclipse was interpreted as a prelude to the end of the world by the army of the German emperor Otto III.
992: Good Friday coincided with the Feast of the Annunciation; this had long been believed to be the event that would bring forth the Antichrist, and thus the end-times events foretold in the book of Revelation. Records from Germany report that a new sun rose in the north and that as many as 3 suns and 3 moons were fighting.
1000-JAN-1: Many Christians in Europe had predicted the end of the world on this date. As the date approached, Christian armies waged war against some of the Pagan countries in Northern Europe. The motivation was to convert them all to Christianity, by force if necessary, before Christ returned in the year 1000. Meanwhile, some Christians had given their possessions to the Church in anticipation of the end. Fortunately, the level of education was so low that many citizens were unaware of the year. They did not know enough to be afraid. Otherwise, the panic might have been far worse than it was. Unfortunately, when Jesus did not appear, the church did not return the gifts. Serious criticism of the Church followed. The Church reacted by exterminating some heretics.
