O’Reilly: Easter Bunny Under Attack!!!!
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 01:34 PM by RedEarth
It started with right-wing news site WorldNetDaily and Fox News daytime:

Now, finally, primetime cable’s fiercest culture warrior has joined the battle. Last night, Bill O’Reilly invited on Newsweek’s John Meacham to discuss the brewing ‘war on Easter’:

O’REILLY: Although some left-wingers in the media deny it, we have documented a number of cases where Christian holidays like Christmas and Easter have been attacked by secular interests. Lawsuits and corporate policies have proved this point over and over again.

Doesn’t take much to get O’Reilly hopping mad.

5. Shouldn't he be upset that pagan symbols & rituals are part of Easter?
(I'm referring to the religous Easter not the secular Easter celebration.)

Eggs and rabbits are fertility symbols and part of ancient pagan lore and ritual.

15. And don't forget Chris Owens leading the Easter Parade
through the French Quarter this Sunday (a certifiable liberal neighborhood.) The attack has been so severe that the city is expecting a very large turnout to celebrate the rabbits and the eggs. Why its even hinted that homosexuals will come out of the bars and join in the fun.

Happy Easter! How was your trip to the French Quarter? Did Mrs. BOSSHOG have a good time?

I've got snapdragons and pansies to plant in my garden! My Crepe myrtle tree just put out leaves and my gelsimium (Carolina Jessamine) vine is about done blooming.

33. She is an icon in the city
She has a nightclub on the corner of Bourbon and St Louis. She has to be about 300 years old but she dresses up and does an act every night. She's as part of the city now as Pete Fountain and Louis Armstrong. check her out.

http://www.chrisowensclub.com/ One of the campy queens of New Orleans.

Had a great visit. Ate catfish at Landry's near the river. Crawfish was $8.95 a pound. Obviously for tourists, because that's an outrageous price. Strolled the farmer's market, the wife got a "funky butt" necklace, I got a margaritaville switchplate for the garage and we got my mother in law another t-shirt. We also got some Fleur-di-lis coasters. We are going back 21 April for the first day of the french quarter festival then again on 30 April for the Bubba Gump 5k through the quarter. Its a Forest Gump themed restaurant on Decatur and after the race they serve Shrimp Pasta and Salad to all participants and lots of beer (at 9:00 in the morning - Yee-haw) We are adding to the tax base and having fun. I've slowed down to nothing on plants this year. We are in a terrible drought, we need rain bad. And we've had fires damn near wearing out our volunteer fire departments. However, I've babied our snapdragons and they are looking good. Heading for Kansas in May to spend Mothers-Day with my mother in law. Thank goodness we get 33 mpg! Have a great Georgia spring.

12. *Snort*
If anything Pagan symbols are being attacked.

Seriously, I looked up "attack" and "persecution" in the dictionary, and I have yet to see any evidence that in the United States Christians are being denied the right to practice their religion, being denied the right to hold public office, being denied the right to vote, etc. etc.

Clue to the nut balls: Not allowing you to force your religion on everyone IS NOT persecution.

thanks for the link.

A sad story. My father (a former Marine, Catholic, and a Republican) responded to this story as: "I took an oath to protecting the Constitution, as did that Marine. That oath includes the First Amendment. I am not going to rest until that man's wife get what she wants."

He has sent numerous letters, been on the phone with, Congress-critters, former Marine buddies who have taken up the cause, etc. Ya know, for a Repuke, I'm very proud of him. ;-)

All that icky Pagan symbolism, interfering with the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus... seems like a pretty clearcut case of a solemn religious observance being watered down by the elite liberal entertainment interests.

22. Interesting how they focus on child-centered symbols each time
Santa and the Easter Bunny are now the symbols children connect to from these holidays. I realize the past pagan history, but am looking at the way they are used in modern times.
It's interesting that these are ones O'Reilly and his ilk focus on. Is it because on some subliminal level they want people to think their children's belief systems, and by association, their children, are "under attack?."

28. What's funny about this it shows just how little O'Reilly
and his sewage dwelling followers truly care about religous holidays. When I was in Catholic school, there was an uproar about the Bunny and Santa and the Christmas tree but for different reasons. Some thought that THOSE symbols were the insult against these holidays. The Obvious marketing aspect was an insult to the beliefs of Jesus. Yet this new group of big business Neo-Christians seem to think otherwise. I'm beginning to think they've never actually set foot in a church!

40. "Secular interests"
One of the many things that are troubling about this guy, is that he knowingly redefines words with impunity to make his "arguments".

The word "secular" does NOT mean "opposed to religion"; it merely means that the subject in question does not contain religious elements. He is actively redefining this word on every show that I've seen.

He has his audience believing that "secular humanists" are pursuing an active agenda of undermining their right to worship. This sort of illogical double talk is intentional.

Most nights I watch the first few minutes of O'R to see what he is NOT discussing, and to see what subject he is attempting to substitute for the news he obviously SHOULD be discussing.

44. Christian Holiday? They STOLE it from the Pagans, Orig the Feast of Eostre
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 02:49 PM by WePurrsevere
was one of many celebrations of Spring, rebirth and fertility. This is where eggs and bunny's come from.

It's hard to imagine people are that ignorant and make a living as so called reporters or journalists. If anyone is curious this is a rather decent write up on Easter: Is Easter a Christian or Pagan Holiday? Geesh... I remember back in the early 70's the wacko Xians were trying to do away with all the Pagan holidays and/or the trimmings that were. .. guess that didn't work so now they're going to try a different tact. ::sigh::

It seems to me that these pseudo christians would be much closer to what Jesus taught if they'd get over the ever tiresome "oh poor me" martyr syndrome they embrace and actually read, learned and tried to live by what Jesus was trying to teach (in the red letter Bible). It's not "persecution" if people are trying to stop you from spreading LIES and spin and if you really ARE a totally ignorant gnat of a human being. Please do the world a favor and EVOLVE up to somewhere near where whomever is in charge of "intelligent design" might actually have a slight chance of a decent do-over.
