Why I once was set up by a sociopath in the work place and went into denial - ignoring weird things that happened like a run on piano lessons with my roomate by adult men in the next year - all of whom wanted to make calls out of my apartment. Or staff car windows being smashed in my last few days of work - thinking - Oh - no - nobody would be so bad. Didn't pick up on the potential meaning of that untill you get out of shock and accept the world as - as awful as it is.

High road is dangerous.

With nefarious - you have to be realistic. And not project your goodness onto them.

Al Gore found himself incapable of diminishing the electoral system and the supreme court after a few weeks and took the "high road". We know he regrets that. But it wasn't in him to fight for what was right when it was looking sordid and hurting institutions. He loved his country. He took the "high road".

You take the "real road" and be judicious and go through as much pain and loss as is needed to get to the other side and find yourself in the real world when dealing with yahoos like neocons or the current GOP.
