Anyone joining the nationwide boycott on May 1st?
Edited on Thu Apr-13-06 05:18 PM by cynatnite
Immigrant advocates called Tuesday for a nationwide boycott of jobs and schools on May 1, even as senators appeared stymied in their efforts to finish the immigration bill that's provoking controversy.

The proposed "Great American Boycott of 2006" is being organized by some of the same activists who rallied an estimated half a million demonstrators in Los Angeles on March 25. Now, in a bid to show nationwide clout, they want immigrants and supporters to avoid work, school, buying and selling on May 1.

"We realize that we have been absent from the political debate in Washington, although we are the voices of those most affected by the legislation," Juan Jose Gutierrez, director of Latino Movement USA, said at a Washington news conference.

The nationwide boycott is also being organized through the ANSWER Coalition, whose member groups range from the Free Palestine Alliance to the Party for Socialism and Liberation and the Korea Truth Coalition

...especially undocumented workers with no job protections.

I, myself, am off work on May 1 anyway (I have Mondays and Tuesdays off).

2. ANSWER calls it the Great American Boycott
Join immigrants and supporters to make Monday, May 1, 2006 a national “day without an immigrant.” Anti-immigrant politicians and hatemongers call immigrants “a drain on society” - they try to pass repressive legislation like HR 4437 and encourage groups like the racist “Minutemen.” But immigrants contribute billions to the economy and receive few benefits in return. We will settle for nothing less than full amnesty and dignity for the millions of undocumented workers presently in the United States. Let’s show the government, corporations and racist politicians that a powerful, united peoples’ movement has the power to win Civil Rights, workers’ rights and make history. No business as usual on May 1!

6. It needs to be an International boycott
The majority of illegals are Mexican, and the alliance was formed by hispanics, so I am using Mexico as my example.

There seems to be this train of thought, that it's either us or them. It doesn't have to be that way. My goal is to bring Mexico up to the level of the U.S. and Canada. If basic needs in life were met, there wouldn't be talk of a 5 billion dollar wall.

Maybe it's happening, but it's not in the MSM, but I don't see people protesting in their own country as much as they are here.
