US plots ‘new liberation of Baghdad’
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2089-2136297,00.html

THE American military is planning a “second liberation of Baghdad” to be carried out with the Iraqi army when a new government is installed.

Pacifying the lawless capital is regarded as essential to establishing the authority of the incoming government and preparing for a significant withdrawal of American troops.

Strategic and tactical plans are being laid by US commanders in Iraq and at the US army base in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, under Lieutenant- General David Petraeus. He is regarded as an innovative officer and was formerly responsible for training Iraqi troops.

The battle for Baghdad is expected to entail a “carrot-and-stick” approach, offering the beleaguered population protection from sectarian violence in exchange for rooting out insurgent groups and Al-Qaeda.

13. Ok, this is something that always rubs me the wrong way...
From the article, the second paragraph....

"Pacifying the lawless capital is regarded as essential to establishing the authority of the incoming government and preparing for a significant withdrawal of American troops."

I am a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. When around any of them when they are babies, if they fuss and cry, I try to "pacify" them. This might mean feeding, rocking, soothing, or whatever, to get them calm, stop crying, and either sleep or be in a good mood.

Why is it when we go bomb the shit out of a city, or a neighborhood, it's referred to as "pacifying" it? We pacify by going in and killing and maiming everybody, beating them into the dust? They might have to pull back, but they are not pacified in any way that I consider pacified meaning.

These articles act like we're going in with warm fuzzies and soothing people...that I would consider pacifying people...being gentle, and understanding, until they have gotten over their anger. Sorry, it's just that articles like this, when they say pacify, they really mean bomb and shoot the living shit out of the Iraqis, including women and children, until they are reduced to a sullen, submissive state, until we withdraw. Then we have to go back and pacify them with bombs and bullets again.

14. That's how it's done
There would be no America without that exact pacification. Hell, there wouldn't be civilization without it.

Nation-states and babies are different.

The control of language is a powerful thing.

15. Good point.
And the article doesn't mention the use of torture either. We all know it's being "used" daily, but they try to keep it secret. These thugs can't do anything right... :(
