Stealth 3-Day Production: Neil Young's New Album Calls for Impeachment!

Looks like Neil Young produced an antiwar album in three days and one of the songs calls for impeachment:

Demme, who filmed the award-winning documentary Neil Young: Heart of Gold, writes in an e-mail, “Neil just finished writing and recording – with no warning – a new album called Living With War. It all happened in three days. ” How rock ‘n ‘roll is that?

Demme continues, “It is a brilliant electric assault, accompanied by a 100-voice choir, on Bush and the war in Iraq…Truly mind blowing. Will be in stores soon.”

Details are pretty scarce, but the featured track, titled “Impeach the President,” includes a rap with Bush’s voice set to the choir chanting “flip/flop” and the like.

Flip flop! Don't you just love it!

Here's more: a blog entry by someone who sang on the album:

When my husband and I got to Capitol, we found 98 other singers, a collection of L.A.'s finest. All I knew was that we were singing on a new Neil Young record, but when the lyrics we were supposed to sing flashed on the giant screen, a roar went up from the choir. I'm not going to give the whole thing away, but the first line of one of the songs was "Let's impeach the President for lyin'!" Turns out the whole thing is a classic beautiful protest record. The session was like being at a 12-hour peace rally. Every time new lyrics would come up on the screen, there were cheers, tears and applause. It was a spiritual experience. I can't believe my good fortune at being a part of this.

I got a chance to talk with Neil for a minute, and I told him that every word of every song expressed what I've been screaming about since 2000. I've never been at a recording session that was more like being at church. Heck, I've never been to a church that was more like a church than that session. We stood up for 12 hours (except for lunch and dinner) and I got a massive headache by the end, but I didn't care. It was worth the price of admission. We finished the session by singing an a capella version of "America the Beautiful" and there was not a dry eye in the house.

If I do nothing else for the rest of my life, I can say I was on that record. Whether it sells or not, it's the truth, and I got to be a part of that. What an honor; what a privilege.

And here's what Harp Magazine had so say about it:

1. Brings tears to me eyes.
I was at SXSW and busted me arse to see Neil. There was a lot of energy in that room.....I was hoping he would play but what the hell it was still cool just bein' there.

As a giggle I recently introduced my 22 year old nephew to Young's music via the recent greatest hits package......his mom (my sis) is a Bu$hbot so I'm sure to buy him the new one! :D

2. here are lyrics
http://downwithtyranny.blogspot.com/2006/04/new-neil-young-album-life-in-war-wont.html

I'm living with war everyday
I'm living with war in my heart everyday
I'm living with war right now

And when the dawn breaks I see my fellow man
And on the flat-screen we kill and we're killed again
And when the night falls, I pray for peace
Try to remember peace (visualize)

I join the multitudes
I raise my hand in peace
I never bow to the laws of the thought police
I take a holy vow
To never kill again
To never kill again

I'm living with war in my heart
I'm living with war in my heart and my mind
I'm living with war right now

Don't take no tidal wave
Don't take no mass grave
Don't take no smokin' gun
To show how the west was won
But when the curtain falls, I pray for peace
Try to remember peace (visualize)

In the crowded streets
In the big hotels
In the mosques and the doors of the old museum
I take a holy vow
To never kill again
Try to remember peace

The rocket's red glare
Bombs bursting in air
Give proof through the night,
That Our flag is still there

I'm living with war everyday
I'm living with war in my heart everyday
I'm living with wat right now.

4. This is excellent. We need Anthems
Maybe "Impeach the President" will become one like "For What It's Worth" or "Ohio". We need new protest songs, Dammit. We need a soundtrack for the Bush administration.
