Falwell says evangelicals won't support Democrats
This little tidbit breaking on some southern television stations. . .and I say YAY! These fundies are headed for a major smackdown in the elections, and of course they'll immediately claim it is a "war on christianity." Frankly, I could give a rat's butt about their stinking claims to religious superiority. . .and I'm fed up with having them constantly bleating their religious beliefs as the only real source of christian thought.

However, one interesting statement once again points to the flipflopping McCain - who is scheduled to speak at Liberty University's commencement. I'm surprised - I thought Jerry would be booking Reverend Moon.

Quick article text:

Falwell: evangelicals won't go for Democrats

LYNCHBURG, Va. The Reverend Jerry Falwell doubts that any Democrat will make inroads with evangelical Christians in the next presidential election because the party supports legal abortion and doesn't oppose gay marriage.

Falwell told C-N-N's "Late Edition" that former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is unlikely to gain evangelical support for the same reason. He said, "As conservative Christians who take the Bible seriously, we have probably irreconcilable differences on life and family."

But Falwell praised Senator John McCain as "pro-life" and "a strong conservative" whose "view on family is just where most conservative Christians' views are."

McCain has agreed to speak at Falwell's Liberty University commencement next month.

1. No real surprise there - Falwell and ilk go for the real whackos.
Edited on Sun Apr-16-06 05:16 PM by Lastlaughin08
Like Falwell supports anything but the crazy fringe right. They dream of a master race, of sorts, with all their nutty ideas as the law of the land.

29. Unless someone is going to MAKE YOU have an abortion or MAKE YOU
marry a member of the same sex, WTF is going on with people who will vote for people who are shitting on them everyday just to make a political-religious point? Abortions affect individuals who make the decision to have them. Dwindling social safety nets, high fuel and energy prices affect everyone. What the hell are these people thinking? Depressed wages, high food, housing, and energy costs and a budget deficit affects all of us including our children and grandchildren. I don't give a shit if my neighbor has an abortion just so long as they don't try to force my daughter have one and I could care less about two women or men living together as a family just so long as they don't try to make me do the same.

3. The Evangelical Christians need to call themselves something else...
Edited on Sun Apr-16-06 05:18 PM by AndyA
Christians they ain't. They preach hatred and discrimination.

They cast the first stone.

They don't turn the other cheek.

They don't do unto others.

Facts are facts. They are NOT CHRISTIANS. They can tell themselves they are all they want, but THEY ARE NOT. And deep down inside, in their inner core, they know they aren't.

6. True. In Scandinavia, you have Evangelical Lutherans....
and they are true Christians, nothing like these right wing bigots that Apartheid Jerry is speaking of.

4. He could be right about evangelicals on those two issues; however,
evangelicals could vote for democrats if the latter could prevent them from economic disaster which might include paying $3,500+ more in federal taxes next year (alternative minimum tax returning to those making $50,000 to $300,000), paying more property taxes b/c of no more federal aid to their local school systems (tax foreclosures), or inability to file for bankruptcy. Money talks, bullshit walks. Let them vote democrat and bitch about it later.

16. Agreed!
An out-of-work citizen, facing inevitable financial ruin if things do not change, is not going to be thinking about abortion, gay marriage or flag-burning as the most important issues when he enters the voting booth.

Asked if the average Fundie voter would want his job, his health insurance and his savings account back if it meant the gay guys down the street might be able to get married, the answer is going to be overwhelmingly, "You're damned real I would!"

The GOP and the Falwells of the world are completely out-of-touch with the challenges facing middle-class and poor Americans. And THAT, in my humble opinion, will be their undoing.

5. Yes, how is this different than anything else Falwell has said?
Falwell's a certifiable lunatic who needs to be put on heavy medication and put away where he can do no further harm.

10. Falwell has nothing
in common with the Moonies.

However, I, too doubt that the Democratic party will make much in the way of inroads into the evangelical community. Again, because they have nothing in common.

14. Rev Moon supports Falwell
Moon "lent" Jerry Falwell lots of money to keep the doors open at Liberty U.

Dark Side of Rev. Moon: Buying the Right

By Robert Parry

On Jan. 28, 1995, a beaming Rev. Jerry Falwell told his Old Time Gospel Hour congregation news that seemed heaven sent. The televangelist hailed two Virginia businessmen as financial saviors of debt-ridden Liberty University, the fundamentalist Christian school that Falwell had made the crown jewel of his Religious Right empire.

"They had to borrow money, hock their houses, hock everything," enthused Falwell. "Thank God for friends like Dan Reber and Jimmy Thomas." Falwell's congregation rose as one to applaud. The star of the moment was Daniel Reber, who was standing behind Falwell. Thomas was not present.

Reber and Thomas earned Falwell's public gratitude by excusing the Lynchburg, Va., school of about one-half of its $73 million debt. In the late 1980s, that flood of red ink had forced Falwell to abandon his Moral Majority political organization and nearly drowned Liberty University in bankruptcy.

Reber and Thomas came to Falwell's rescue in the nick of time. Their non-profit Christian Heritage Foundation of Forest, Va., snapped up a big chunk of Liberty's debt for $2.5 million, a fraction of its face value. Thousands of small religious investors who had bought church construction bonds through a Texas company were the big losers. But Falwell shed no tears. He told local reporters that the moment was "the greatest single day of financial advantage" in the school's history.

Left unmentioned in the happy sermon was the identity of the bigger guardian angel who had been protecting Falwell's financial interests -- from a distance and without publicity. That secret benefactor was the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the self-proclaimed South Korean messiah who is controversial with many fundamentalist Christians because of his bizarre Biblical interpretations and his brainwashing tactics that have torn thousands of young people from their families. Moon also has grown harshly anti-American in recent years.

17. Well, we must be doing something right. As I've often told my students ...
... you know you're ok when certain folk don't like you.

Seriously, do you realize how horrible it would be to have Falwell and his pack of nutjobs being in any way supportive of something you were saying/doing.

Never Forget: George W. Bush willfully violated National Security to cover-up his willful launch of a war of aggression and illegal occupation of Iraq.

18. He would rather support the party that says "screw the poor & the
working class -- our top priorities are the corporations & the wealthiest Americans."

"Oh, & support the troops because they'll need all they can get. The administration we so enthusiastically support could care less if they're stuck in a civil war without proper, adequate body protection."

Falwell & his pretentious cronies worked hard to turn women's right to abortion & gay legal unions into wedge issues so that the fact that they've turned away from the real Christian values -- help the poor, tolerance, equality, love of others -- won't be noticed.

Falwell and his ilk are a great touchstone of evil. Anyone they can endorse is someone worth opposing. Anyone they despise likely has some good qualities.

23. Somehow I Don't Think That ALL Evangelicals Will Listen To Jerry!
Remember that Carter was elected by evangelicals.

It's only since the abortion bandwagon took hold that evangelicals have supported those on the R side. (Roe was 78, Carter elected in 76) Roe probably took Carter down as much as anything else did.

Although Carter got screwed with the Iranian hostage situation which, between that and "stagflation", is credited with taking him down.

The truth is Carter took the helm of an economy that had been screwed by Nixon's wage and price freeze, and doublecrossed by GHW Bush on the Iranian hostages.

But back to the evangelical question, not all evangelicals are wealthy (most aren't)
and while, I'm sure there won't be an evangelical wave voting this time for democrats, there will be some that do.

and the rest of the country is against the RW I think. (look at the polls)
