BUSH: Alito is "imminently" qualified
Oh, I know it's a minor faux pas in comparison to this dangerous nominee's potential, but 'imminently'!?

====

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. I just had breakfast with Judge Alito. I told him I think he conducted himself with such dignity and class in the weeks leading up to the confirmation process, which begins today. Sam Alito is imminently qualified to be a member of the bench. I’m not the only person who feels that way -- the American Bar Association looked at his record, looked at his opinions, looked at his temperament, and came to the same conclusion, that he is well qualified to be a Supreme Court judge.

1. Since it was a transcript of a speech...
... this is more likely a mistake of the transcriptionist. In colloquially spoken English, it's very difficult to get the pronunciation difference between "imminent" and "eminent." They're close enough that the transcriptionist should have applied the contextually correct word.

Cheers.

7. But we're talking about Bush and a multisyllabic word.
Methinks the transcriptionist is accurate, Bush was not. Can't expect them to catch every mangled word that the monkey gets out.

21. Okay...
... you say "eminent." Then say, "imminent." Tell me how different they sound (no fussing by trying to say "eminent" with a beginning long "e" to try and make them sound different to you, because that's not correct).

Look, Bush is an asshole, but there's no point in being silly about stuff like this, where's there's a question about accurate transcription. Now, "peeance, freeance," there's not any argument about. :)

22. Color me silly. You think he knows the difference between the 2 words?
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 12:12 AM by Bluebear
I doubt it. PS, I first heard word of it on WBZ news who reported that he misspoke.

26. That wasn't the point...
... was it? The words sound virtually the same, as I suggested in my first post. Fine, he's reading it from notes, or that's what he was prepped to say that. I doubt he catches the drift of most of what he says when it's written for him (or is funneled into his pea brain through his earpiece :) ).

But, transcriptions are occurring so rapidly today, and in areas of middling English skills (thanks to outsourcing), that my thinking is that it's a transcription error made due to misunderstanding the language and/or the context. It's easy to simply react--Bush has given us lots of opportunities for that. :) But, sometimes, a quick reaction isn't the right answer.

Cheers.

29. Don't really need to call WBZ...
... since I've made up my mind on the basis of a rational review of the evidence. Did WBZ base their opinion on the tape? Or the transcript? You don't link to their story, so I can't decide from that.

Logic counts. Abandon that and you won't be able to tell when the serious stuff happens. I repeat, hopefully in the attempt to be finally understood--say the word "eminent," and "imminent," one after the other. They cannot be distinguished, verbally, one from the other, except in the context of the sentence. As you originally posted a transcript, that's the evidence I have available. I think the transcriptionist is responsible for this particular error.

You believe Bush fucked up. It's your choice. I think he fucked all of us nominating Alito. That seems to me to be the critical issue.

Read the first part of the OP. I said it was a minor faux-pas. Why are you belaboring this amd questioning my "logic"?

The transcriptionist should have known better, if, indeed, ** said eminently (which I doubt). I would get a transcript sent back for that kind of an error.

24. I did some medical transcription a few years back
A transcriptionist deals in exact words. That kind of mistake would be unacceptable to someone who expects to be paid for their transcription job. In any area of expertise (apparently other than journalism) such a person would quickly be out of business.

3. Someone should make a movie........
of all bush's malaprops, butchered syntax and made up words. I know, they'd have to leave hours and hours of it on the cutting room floor but it would probably win the Oscar for "best comedy".
There would have to be a disclaimer at the beginning, something to the effect of "do not watch this movie if pregnant or if you have a history of heart disease". "This movie may cause incontrollable fits of laughter and is not suitable for those with weak immune systems".
I'd pay to go see it!

The only problem is they think this is the way the President should be speaking. It endears him to the NASCAR fan.

Unfortunately, the transcript doesn't include his many ummmmm---ahhhhh's and long pauses where he stares stupidly at the ground, trying to remember what his puppetmasters told him to say next.

And yes, he clearly said "imminently". No mistake in the transcript about that. The second I heard it I rolled my eyes and muttered my usual mantra of 'fucking idiot'.

16. bush endorsing anyone with the "imminently qualified" label
should immediately send up a warning flag! Oh and bush is a Moran! His "down home, folksy" way of speaking shows just how intellectually lazy he is, or just how dishonest he is. Both, really.

17. and to think that I spent last night proofreading a letter of reference!
A student of mine has applied to a prestigious graduate school, and I was lying awake thinking, "Will it torpedo his chances if my recommendation has spelling or grammatical errors?"

Well, gee -- if the US President doesn't worry about it, why should I?

Given his penchant for picking toadies and dimwitted cronies (Brownie)...

Heck, Henrietta the Chicken (my pet) is "imminently" qualified; and probably is more intelligent than most of his Cabinet.

Gad, this man doesn't need a high office, he needs a dictionary.

30. Bush is right...
If GWB is electable as president - then there is no standard too low for any position in government.

In theory, I am waiting for Bush to nominate a monkey for a high position in our government - and see the GOP support it, and his defenders defend it. What am I saying, we already have a monkey in a high position in our government.

Sorry, Georgie....but any REAL American knows that a candidate prescreened and approved by such nonsense crazy organizations like Focus on the "Family," the American "Family" Association, and the Concerned Women for America is not representative of the mainstream.
