Man who got fired from Public Radio after critising Reagan in an online forum tells his story.

During that week, employees of the station were greeted with an interoffice memo dictating that we (the announcers/producers), in accordance with the mandated national day of mourning on the day of Reagan's burial, were to program into every hour of our shows a piece of "respectful and appropriate" music "by an American composer" for the national day of commemoration and to make an announcement that the work was to be played "in commemoration of our national day of mourning."

I had to blow off steam about this. I went to a forum whereby I knew I would find sympathetic souls: Democratic Underground.In the midst of my ranting, I relayed my intention to follow through with the technicality of the order, but that I would also exercise the liberty given for the undictated remainder of my show.

I programmed what I was asked, and made my mind up to announce it without using the word mourning--the phrase I decided upon was "in conjuction with our day of national observance"--while continuing as directed. The remaining pieces carried themes of squandered ecological stewardship and sociological harmony.

Unbeknownst to me, Democratic Underground was regularly monitored by political adversaries. A young conservative at Vanderbilt University saw the thread whereby I talked about my dilemma, deciphered where I was employed, and wrote the station's general manager painting me as determined to "sabotage" the station's Reagan memorial.

The GM immediately responded in appreciation to the e-mailer, then called me. He asked if I had been posting to Democratic Underground. When I responded that I had, he told me I was fired immediately and to turn my keys as soon as possible. I quietly agreed and complied immediately.

Their whole gig is Old School Russia and they are the first to call a Liberal a Commie. I get why they use the Socialist thing--a mere hyperbole--but they are the Commies. What is it about what they do that is different from Germany or Russia in the 40's?

Reagan was a "great" president. I found an article naming all the criminals in his administration, and really wanted to send it, but my son said it would just present hard feelings.

I read some blogs at work, and wonder if I could get into trouble. Recently I had to look up the article about that 5.5 tons on cocaine that had ties to Tom Delay(whatever happened to that alarming story?), and I was worried. I usually pick sites like commondreams,dailykos, etc that don't sound so radical at the address bar like DU, but this site is the boss!


But, I agree that all this Reagan glorifying crap is just that, and I think he had Alzheimer's starting at the beginning of his second term. (He really started the ball rolling with this type of government) Papa Bush was really running the show then. That's why they got so pissed that Clinton won-Bush had been running the show for quite awhile, and had no intention of giving up power.

Off topic-how about presidents running for 6 years, and no 2nd term? No favors, no reason to have to troll for money-no reason to. Just an off topic thought.

I always wondered what happened to misanthrope. Looks like his being fired just got him out of the sinking ship a little sooner than everyone else. Glad to hear he's doing OK.

"The station's license is owned by a small, private college (a Jesuit school) and even though it received public funding not only from the locals via fundraising campaigns, but also from the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, the private categorization of the school made their actions legal. It seems WHIL is "public" when it behooves them and "private" when it works to their convenience."

The Jesuits, themselves, are usually campaigning progressive - sometimes, as in San Salvador, to the point of martyrdom. I hope the Provincial looks into it and sets them straight.

misanthrope really shouldn't have done that - he/she(?) set himself up for the fall. MallRat is a longtime dedicated DU'r so the question was innocent enough, but you can see that even MallRat had reservations about asking it, realizing that giving away the timeslot already, the city would triangulate "misanthrope"s position for any enemies that might want to try and get him fired.

Keep in mind, this post #37 was 11 hours after post #30, so I think after misanthrope slept on it, he realized that he may have made a mistake by revealing his position in post #30. It's almost as if, subconsciously, he felt it coming, the firing.

He didn't bow to his holiness, Ron Reagan, and so must pay.

Snitchy Republicans with nothing to do but monitor the world to make sure no one is offending their little theories and idols. Forget NPR. That was dead long ago, in my mind. But this is a perfect example of the idiocy that calls itself Republican. We fight to get through their mud so that we can just maybe have a chance of spending our money on the poor starving souls in Darfur, instead of threatening the world with our bombs, and we're sandbagged by these reckless and careless creatures.
