Translator LEAVES OUT Bush's laundry list of Chinese "commitments"

Okay, I don't understand much mandarin, but I'm damn sure this happened.

Bush is at the podium for the visit of the Chinese premier Hu with a translator putting his words into mandarin.

Bush makes a long laundry list of changes that the chinese have committed to, and frankly, put in a way I thought was less than diplomatic, but it was letting US companies compete in china on same footings as domestic companies, currency reform, and a number of other changes that WE would want and was, in Bush's words, acting consistent with the international economic system and being a WTO member.

And the translation that followed was pretty goddamn short.

All the "commitments" of China got left out by the translator, I'm sure of it.

and the chinese pretend they didn't hear it. The show's for us. We are the ones being manipulated.

"fluent in idiot."

so the heckler's words are just mysteries. Wonderful.

that she's there, she's angry, she's interrrupteing and making a good TV show and giving them filler.

Putting the work into finding out what she said by picking up a phone isn't their bag.

Director: (in Japanese) Mr. Bob-san, you are relaxing in your study. On the table is a bottle of Suntory whiskey. Got it? Look slowly, with feeling, at the camera, and say it gently - say it as if you were speaking to an old friend. Just like Bogie in Casablanca, "Here's looking at you, kid" - Suntory time.

Translator: Umm. He want you to turn, looking at camera. OK?

Bob: That's all he said?

Translator: Yes. Turn to camera.

If it weren't a particular part of the welcome that the chinese might not want to hear, I would assume that the translator was just saying something like "yadda yadda yadda" and shortening it up just for time's sake. However, it was clear that he was pretending something wasn't being said.
