Breaking News: Grand Jury Hears Evidence Against Rove

Just as the news broke Wednesday about Scott McClellan resigning as White House press secretary and Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove shedding some of his policy duties, Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald met with the grand jury hearing evidence in the CIA leak case and introduced additional evidence against Rove, attorneys and other US officials close to the investigation said.

The grand jury session in federal court in Washington, DC, sources close to the case said, was the first time this year that Fitzgerald told the jurors that he would soon present them with a list of criminal charges he intends to file against Rove in hopes of having the grand jury return a multi-count indictment against Rove.

In an interview Wednesday, Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin, confirmed that Rove remains a "subject" of Fitzgerald's two-year-old probe.

"Mr. Rove is still a subject of the investigation," Luskin said. In a previous interview, Luskin asserted that Rove would not be indicted by Fitzgerald, but he was unwilling to make that prediction again Wednesday.

"Mr. Fitzgerald hasn't made any decision on the charges and I can't speculate what the outcome will be," Luskin said. "Mr. Rove has cooperated completely with the investigation."

Fitzgerald is said to have introduced more evidence Wednesday alleging Rove lied to FBI investigators and the grand jury when he was questioned about how he found out that Valerie Plame Wilson worked for the CIA and whether he shared that information with the media, attorneys close to the case said.

Fitzgerald told the grand jury that Rove lied to investigators and the prosecutor eight out of the nine times he was questioned about the leak and also tried to cover-up his role in disseminating Plame Wilson's CIA status to at least two reporters.

Additionally, an FBI investigator reread to jurors testimony from other witnesses in the case that purportedly implicates Rove in playing a role in the leak and the campaign to discredit Plame Wilson's husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, whose criticism of the Bush administration's pre-war Iraq intelligence lead to his wife being unmasked as a covert CIA operative.

Luskin said Rove has not discussed any plea deal with Fitzgerald.

Of course, it is the grand jury, not Mr. Fitzgerald, that decides to indict. But, as some DUers have noted, Mr. Fitzgerald presents his case in a very convincing manner.

I'd bet that Karl isn't the only one wetting his pants this week. At least one other White House official is in trouble, I think.

Remember he said publicly that Karl told him he was not involved in this... He would look like a fool now if Rove is indicted, which looks like that just might happen.....

McClellan is up to his neck in headlines that are about to break. The dike is breaking all around them.

The Rove story is bullshit too that they're moving him to politics full time. Do you think it's coincidence this "reshuffling" took place two days after the Ryan verdict?

I hadn't even heard the news that Fitz was back in Washington already in front of the grand jury. I just knew it was coming. People had to be idiots to think he would empanel a new grand jury for no reason and leave town.

He just had to clear the Ryan trial which took a huge amount of his time. Now that's wrapped up and he's right back to where he left off.

The man is a saint.

I find it just as profitable to guess at the grand jury workings in the Duke rape case.

Here's what I am sure about: Fitzgerald is doing his job. Other than that, I can wait for actual occurances.

Unnamed sources are fun and sometimes the best one has to go on, but nothing counts in a GJ investigation until an indictment is handed down. I'd remind everyone there were plenty of rumors of a Rove indictment and all we ended up with was a Libby perjury charge. I'm still pleased I never used the term "Fitzmas".

I can't say if it was or wasn't a deliberate hack job on his career, but I think Leopold has been careful since then.

Rove will be there directing all the traffic & slime...the stealing of the election, (electronic voting machines) in November, so as to assure the republicans will keep the majority and no indictments nor challenges to this corrupt administration will ever occur.

No way will Rove be leaving...they'll just shift him and his useless title around so he can continue with the upcoming slime...

Rove is far too valuable to the republicans...they'll make up some excuse, like they'll wait for Rove, which could take years, (look at Libby) to be convicted of a crime...

If Rove was leaving he would of been gone yesterday...they know what the next days news is going to be...they just shifted the bullshit around for the media to take its cue, as if Rove was scolded or bitch-slapped by Bush...Because they need Rove desperately to direct and steal...perhaps AFTER the elections he'll become more of a liability and he'll be gone...still even then, doubtful, (with two unchallenged years left) unless Rove is actually convicted.
