I love when freepers use this lame analogy to justify high gas prices.
Locally, gas here is about $2.78, which is relatively cheap compared to most of the country. Anyway, someone I know who is a rw'er overheard me griping about the high gas prices. They piped up and said: "Hey if you think a gallon of gas is expensive, I had to pay $3.29 for a gallon of milk last night at the grocery store." I just said "Bad analogy man, when was the last time you consumed 10 gallons of milk in a day?" He had no reply for that one.

and we have to pay $3.29/gallon to fill them up, he'll be singing a different tune. It's really a stupid analogy.

56. you said it
I told a guy something similar a few months ago...

"I buy 1 gallon of milk a week - if 1 gallon of gas a week at $3.29/gallon will get me back and forth to work I wouldn't complain...."

a couple of weeks ago the same guy was complaining about gas prices and how much it costs him to fill his truck (diesel) -- I smiled and told him he should be using milk instead of gas...

4. GREAT response!!!
I stopped to get gas tonight ($2.86 for regular) and as I stepped out of the car, the person in the car a head of me began to moan ... "Can You Believe This? $57.00!" Then I heard the lady in the next lane say that she stops everyday to get $10 worth of gas now and today, it got her to work and back to the gas station only!

It is really starting to hurt everyone, not just those of us with an already stretched budget. This is going to be one long, hot, interesting summer for sure.

We could cruise all night on 50 cents!

I watch my son try to earn enough to pay his insurance (almost 2 grand a year because he is only 18) and still have money to fill his tank. Forget anything extra like a burger with his friends or anything like that.

16. Big difference between here and there.
Those high gas prices there really don't kill cconsumers there as bad as they do here. Those are VERY small countries compared to the US, they drive much more fuel efficient vehicles, sprawl is not a problem, and they have great mass transit. This is why Europeans can deal with those high fuel prices, while they kill us.

41. So the problem really is Exxon, not high gas prices.
This thread originally was dealing with high gas prices. Since our prices are not going towards govt services or healthcare, and instead corporate profits, it is really a problem with corporations.

45. yes and no
Comparing our high prices with higher prices of Europe is a bogus argument, because they get a lot more for what they pay. Are the corporations gouging us? I don't know. There are a dizzying number of explanations for how this could happen, including deficient refining capacity, which we know the industry suppressed in the last twenty years to drive up prices.

The facts remain that prices are at an all time high, as are corporate profits. I'm willing to put two and two together, and conclude something is amiss.

Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 08:09 PM by baldguy
In Europe most of the price goes to taxes, and the citizenry have a say in how those taxes are spent.

In America most of the price goes to oil corp profits, which are then used to take political power away from the citizenry.

This link gives you the cost of gasoline globally.

I can't seem to find exact tax figures for each European country, but it seems that gasoline is taxed from 60% to 75% across the continent.

Trains and buses go to every village.

Yes, it's a smaller country, but even taking that into account, we are far, far behind in building public transportation.

Gas in Germany right now is 1.15 euro per litre. Before Bush destroyed the dollar, that would have been about 4$ / gal.

When you do these gas price comparisons, you have to consider the damage to the dollar by BushCorp.

use of the automobile. Hopefully this pain will create an evolution in the way we live in this country.

We need to lose dependence on our cars. Even George W Bush says this.

We need to consume less.

We need to bring better mass transit to the people.

We need universal healthcare.

Do you support a $3.00 / gallon tax on gas to make it happen?

Here are some of the "nitty-gritty" numbers from 1986:

Cost of a gallon of regular gas: $0.93
Cost of a dozen eggs: $0.87
Cost of a gallon of Milk: $2.22

Looking at those numbers sure took some of the fun out of my little project.
