General Motors has changed its mind and will build hybrid pickup trucks in Oshawa, Ont., after all.
So says the Canadian Auto Workers union, which added that assembly of the hybrid truck will begin in the fall.
CAW local 222 president Chris Buckley told CTV Newsnet on Saturday that GM's move was a “glimmer of hope” that the plant may remain open, although there is no indication that plans to close the plant next year have changed.
“It's a small win,” Mr. Buckley said. “We need to take some larger steps to secure the jobs of our 2,600 members that will be affected

CAW officials and GM management met on Friday, but GM has made no official comment on its change of heart.
The company told the union on June 3 that it would close the truck plant in late 2009, putting as many as 2,600 workers out of a job. That announcement came just two weeks after negotiations in which GM agreed to keep the plant open until at least 2011.
The union responded with a 12-day blockade of GM's Canadian headquarters.
