My employer laid off 10% of the company this week
I work for a software company that has had only one non-profitable quarter since I've worked here. (over 7 years) And that one non-profitable quarter was the one following 9/11. My own dept lost 2 people yesterday. My group would have lost 3, except that I've given my notice, and will be leaving of my own accord in 2 weeks. This was out of a group of 14. Me, I'll be fine. I'm going back to school to train for a career change, out of IT and into health care. But I feel bad for the people who did not see this coming. The woman across the aisle from me, who was still working full time at age 66, because she couldn't afford to retire. She's gone. The man in the cubicle in front of mine, who'd had attendence problems lately, because his wife was seriously ill. He's gone. What will his family do once their company health insurance ends?

I hope y'all don't mind. I felt the need to share, during what's turned out to be a stressful week.

:(

2. A corporation doesn't have a conscience. That is why they should not
have rights as an individual. We have fascists in power and more people's lives will be destroyed. You are not alone. I hope you find something soon. :dem:

4. I'm fine - It's the others I worry about
I'm starting school full-time in September, to train for a career change. But a lot of people here had families to support. Me and my 2 cats will be fine. I've been planning for my own move outta here for a long time.

10. They exist for one purpose (profits) and they are immortal.
That's scary enough without giving them the same rights as real people.

5. Feels bad: Good work no longer insures economic security. In fact, it makes you attractive to
corporate raiders.

My best to you and your colleagues.

7. I'm so sorry to hear this. We have had a lot of layoffs in my department
in the past year or so.

In the last round, we lost five people. The next day, the head of our department showed up in his new Aston Martin convertible.

He's lucky I didn't take a key right down the side of it...

9. My manager seemed to be really torn up about it
She says she had no say in the matter, that her management just sent her a list of who was a goner.
