National AFL-CIO says 'honor commitments'

The world’s largest labor organization, the AFL-CIO, passed a resolution in Chicago this week calling upon Deutsche Post and DHL to honor their commitments and not complete a proposed deal with UPS until and unless questions are answered.

The AFL-CIO concludes the resolution, “The proposed DHL/UPS transaction should not be consummated or effectuated until a full investigation of its antitrust, competitive and employment implications is completed by the Department of Justice, Congress and the state of Ohio, and all such questions are answered. … Finally, if the transaction is permitted to proceed following appropriate government review, UPS should be compelled to make job offers to all impacted employees for any positions that come open in their classification after the deal is implemented.”

The AFL-CIO Executive Council passed the resolution at its Monday meeting in Chicago.

“The fight for the workers at DHL is a fight for all working Americans — and ALPA is proud to have our brothers and sisters from the AFL-CIO by our side,” said Capt. John Prater, president of the Air Line Pilots Association Int’l (ALPA). The ALPA union represents ASTAR Air Cargo pilots, who are based at the Wilmington Air Park.

“The only way that managements will get the message is for American workers to stand together against companies that seek to disregard contracts and sidestep their commitments,” added Prater.

Prater is a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Council.

The resolution is titled “DHL and Deutsche Post: Honor commitments made to workers and communities.”
