Star-Ledger publisher reiterates threat of sale
NEW YORK -

The publisher of The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., reiterated on Tuesday his threat to put New Jersey's largest newspaper up for sale next month if its drivers union fails to approve a new contract.

Star-Ledger Publisher George Arwady seemed to suggest, however, that a tentative agreement has been reached and awaits ratification. In a memo to employees, Arwady urged the union to "take the steps necessary to ratify their draft agreement by the deadline."

Arwady and union officials did not return phone calls Tuesday.

The memo came a day after another union, representing 400 mailers, overwhelmingly agreed to a three-year wage freeze and buyouts of a quarter of its members.

1. Just wanted to say
Thanks for posting Labor news. Like other news, I get most of it on DU.

Proud to be a member of UAW 1981, National Writers Union, and a delegate to the Alameda County Labor Council!

3. Me too. I'm so lazy, I usually rely on OmahaSteve to post everything.

He's changing shifts, and I don't want to see any stories going unnoticed.

I'm on the NYC Central Labor Council. :hi:

2. They'll probably sell it anyway
This is probably a ploy to make the paper more attractive to potential buyers. I just hope the eventual buyer isn't Rupert Murdoch.

I was a reporter at the Star-Ledger for 11 years and still have friends there.
