Union effort brings protest

Chamber wants end to tactics used against company

By Ruth Liao
Statesman Journal

A carpenters union’s campaign to boost wages has led to public demonstrations at a few job sites in Salem.

The Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters, which represents union carpenter members, has targeted local drywall business Fulgaro Interior and a subcontractor that worked on a project at Willamette University.

Michael Fulgaro said the union approached his company a year ago and asked if he wanted to become a union contractor, but the company declined.

“We felt it wasn’t a good business decision,” Fulgaro said. “We felt it would force our costs to go up, in a tough economic climate as is.”

From then on, the carpenters union began contacting job sites and customers of Fulgaro, who is normally employed as a subcontractor. The union issued letters, distributed fliers at job sites and threatened to picket.

Ben Basom, a representative with Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters, said Fulgaro’s company does not meet labor area standards regarding wage and benefits.
