New Hospital Care Grants can help with large unreimbursed hospital bills

Perhaps nothing can force a family into financial ruin more quickly than the soaring costs of health care, particularly hefty hospital bills.

First, make your voice heard by completing the 2009 Health Care for America Survey, sponsored by the AFL-CIO and Working America. As health care reform is addressed, it is urgent that decision makers hear from working families like yours. All individual responses are kept strictly confidential.

If you are facing large, unreimbursed hospital bills the new Union SAFE Hospital Care Grant from Union Plus may be able to help. You may qualify for $1,000 in assistance.

Union member Kristin McArthur, of Dallas, GA, says the $1,000 grant she received helped her cope with the emotional and financial stress she suffered following surgery.

"The Union Plus Grant helped me a lot. There was a lot of pressure on me to pay off the hospital bills, but how could I do that when I wasn't even able to work? I still had to pay for prescriptions, food, and other household expenses. It was such a big relief after I used the $1,000 to pay off what I owed for the surgery."

The Hospital Care Grant is part of the $3 million Union SAFE initiative introduced this year by Union Plus to assist union members facing financial hardship.
