from the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS:
Grand Hyatt workers protest in advance of union vote
By Vicki Vaughan -
About 20 hotel employees protested in front of downtown’s 1,003-room Grand Hyatt Hotel on Friday, saying the hotel’s management is pressuring them not to vote for union representation.
The workers said the hotel’s management earlier had agreed to be neutral and not interfere with a vote — set for July 17 — in which workers would have a chance to join a union.
Workers, accompanied by leaders from Unite Here union and a number of local activists, surged into the hotel’s lobby to present signed declarations of support from dozens of citizens, including labor leaders, elected officials, activists and church leaders.
The protesters had hoped to meet with the hotel’s managing director, but a spokesman said he wasn’t available. Hotel officials later denied the claims.
“This is about treating workers with dignity; it’s about better wages and better health care,” hotel worker and cook George Ibarra said. Those seeking union representation include food and beverage workers, housekeepers, laundry workers and bellhops.
