Safeway Presents "Last" Contract Offer in Colorado; Faces Strike Lines in Canada

In Colorado, Safeway supermarkets has put what it calls the company's last contract offer on the table, but the union representing the stores workers says there is little difference between this contract and the one previously offered. United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 has been representing 17,000 workers in negotiations with King Soopers, Albertson’s and Safeway. The two sides have been in negotiations since April. One of the biggest sticking points for the union is still in this new contract – no wage increases for workers with little experience. Meanwhile, the grocer is dealing with a strike at a warehouse in Edmonton, Canada. Three hundred fifty Safeway workers have been on strike since Monday and the company has begun hiring replacement workers. Workers are concerned with a plan by management to add three hours to the full time work shift of 37-hours. The workers are concerned if they agree to those demand they could face layoffs.
