The National Labor Relations Board has ordered Massey Energy to recognize and bargain with the United Mine Workers Union on behalf of workers at the Mammoth Mine in eastern Kanawha County.
The NLRB has also ruled Massey must rehire 85 former workers at the mine who were discriminated against because they were members of the union.
UMWA President Cecil Roberts calls the ruling a great day for those former workers and a great day for American working people.
The mine used to be called the Cannelton Mine. It had been a union mine since 1969 until Massey purchased it out of bankruptcy five years ago.
Massey Energy President and CEO Don Blankenship said in a prepared release Friday afternoon that his company will appeal the NLRB ruling.
