A labor dispute at the Elmhurst Honeywell Dairy in Jamaica is threatening to spoil New York's milk supply.

More than 170 workers were abruptly locked out of the milk processing plant by management on Sunday morning, labor leaders said.

The company processes 1.5 million gallons of milk a week, nearly 90% of the city's supply.

"There are people who have worked 30 or 40 years here," said Frank Wunderlich, secretary treasurer of Local 584, which represents the workers.

"We were negotiating a contract when Henry Schwartz locked the men out of the complex," Wunderlich said.

Employees had been working at the plant on an expired contract for nearly two weeks when the lockout began.

A four-day lockout at the Elmhurst Honeywell Dairy in Jamaica ended last week after dairy owners and union leaders worked out a new contract, halting already high milk prices from rising to almost $5 a gallon.

Union leaders and Elmhurst Dairy reached an agreement July 18 which increased the wage scale for entry level workers and maintained the salary and benefit levels for its current 170 union workers, according to Jay Valentine, the senior vice president and general manager of Elmhurst Dairy. With milk production down in the state in the last month both sides had a difficult time negotiating a new contract after it expired in June, the plant's owners.
