Jose Ozorio Figueroa Fired Monday after Leading Worker Walkouts
On August 6, Smithfield Tar Heel plant worker Jose Ozorio Figueroa was terminated. Company representatives claim it was for showing up four minutes late to his shift, but Ozorio believes that he was fired for his union activities.

Worker Intimidation at the Tar Heel Plant Should Not Be Tolerated!
Ozorio had been an active voice for Latino workers in the Tar Heel plant, and a strong union supporter. Last fall, as a number of Latino workers were intimidated and fired over immigration issues, Ozorio began to organize company employees to demand their rights. In November, he organized a 100-worker strong walkout in support of their colleagues.
According to his statement, Ozorio received tardiness citations even on days he was on time for his shift. When he questioned the human resources department, he says he was told “you have to be at your work station 5 minutes prior to the start of your shift, anything after that is considered late.” You can read his full statement here:
