ALERT! Smithfield Terminates Latino Pro-Union Worker
Jose Ozorio Figueroa Fired Monday after Leading Worker Walkouts

On August 6, Smithfield Tar Heel plant worker Jose Ozorio Figueroa was terminated. Company representatives claim it was for showing up four minutes late to his shift, but Ozorio believes that he was fired for his union activities.

Tell Them To Rehire Jose Ozorio Figueroa!
Worker Intimidation at the Tar Heel Plant Should Not Be Tolerated!

Ozorio had been an active voice for Latino workers in the Tar Heel plant, and a strong union supporter. Last fall, as a number of Latino workers were intimidated and fired over immigration issues, Ozorio began to organize company employees to demand their rights. In November, he organized a 100-worker strong walkout in support of their colleagues.

According to his statement, Ozorio received tardiness citations even on days he was on time for his shift. When he questioned the human resources department, he says he was told “you have to be at your work station 5 minutes prior to the start of your shift, anything after that is considered late.” You can read his full statement here: http://www.smithfieldjustice.com/figueroa.php

If you would like to help directly, Interfaith Worker Justice has set up a fund to assist workers like Ozorio who have been terminated from Smithfield’s Tar Heel plant. You can find out more about the fund here: http://www.iwj.org/dev/smithfield-fund.html

1. Comment - what's his race or ethnicity have to do with anything?
When any poster mentions the race of illegal immigrants they are then accused being racist xenophobes by a few.

So WTF does his race as stated on the title have to do with any of this? If he is a legal American worker I support him 100%. If he is here illegally he is part of the problem, not the solution.

2. I believe he is legal because...

From the story link: http://www.smithfieldjustice.com/figueroa.php

In September 2006 the company started terminating workers because their social security numbers weren’t matching. In November 2006 I and a group of about 12 workers began to organize our other co-workers to walk off their lines that day at 9:30am. We began by talking about coordinating the time that we would stop the lines.

Had he been illegal, he probably would not have had a correct Social Security card.

I didn't mean for the duplicate post by itself. Sorry.
