CHICAGO -- The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees said it filed a lawsuit today, asking a judge to order Comptroller Dan Hynes to issue pay checks to state employees.
Hynes has said that he can't write payroll checks without a state budget in place. That means 4,900 employees might not get paid on time, and more would be affected if the budget stalemate drags on.
Union officials said the union filed its lawsuit in Christian County and has asked a judge for a temporary restraining order to compel Hynes to pay employees.
The union represents about 45,000 state and public university employees.
AFSCME Assistant Director Mike Newman said the union's members should not pay the price for the inability of lawmakers to pass a budget.
