The already short staffed Los Angeles Unified School District is looking down the barrel of more layoffs as a solution to close a massive budget deficit. Jesse Russell reports:
On Tuesday LA Unified Board members approved a new budget that could see 2500 clerical workers out of a job. That includes library aids and others. Senior office technician Connie Borja is already over worked.

The district is facing a $640 million deficit.
The California State Employees Association proposed that the school district give clerical workers one workshare day a week – as a way to save jobs. Under the union’s plan, the Employment Development Department would provide unemployment benefits to clerical employees who agree to reduce their work hours. The school board rejected the proposal saying it would come with a high price tag, but CSEA spokesperson Dvora Mayer said the EDD agreed to not charge school district for its portion of the workshare.
: They agreed that they would wave any application fees for the district to pay or any administrative costs.
Even with the layoffs officials have said they are willing to return to the bargaining table.
