Despite Big Free Agency Spending, NBA Owners Press For Concessions From Players Union Under Lockout Threat

Even multi-millionaire NBA players have labor issues with their bosses. And this year those issues may lead to the owners locking the players out of NBA stadiums. New York Daily News NBA columnist Mitch Lawrence says despite throwing millions of dollars at players in free agency, NBA owners are saying they lost about $400 million last season, so they’re out for concessions from the players union.

: “So they’re basically gonna to take it out on the players in saying we’ve got to reduce salaries, we’ve got to reduce guaranteed money and we’ve got to reduce guaranteed raises every year. And that’s where we stand now and it looks like we’re pointed toward a lockout in July of next year.”

Workers earning average working class wages often have little sympathy for rich players in these disputes with their billionaire bosses. But Lawrence says it will also be hard for owners to convince fans that locking out players and ruining next season is justified, given the free spending by owners in free agency.

: “So it doesn’t add up. And there are some league people who are close to Stern who say this is really hurting our cause here from the standpoint of selling a lockout to the public.”
