Union organizer wins court case

A judge orders that a local woman be rehired after she was illegally fired for organizing a union at her workplace.

The National Labor Relations Board has ordered a local auto parts manufacturer to rehire a worker fired last year after she successfully spearheaded a union.

But Pacific Coast Industries Inc., 4100 Holly Drive, has yet to rehire Felicia Montes of Manteca, who awaits an additional court decision after her former employer appealed the case to the labor board’s Washington, D.C., office.

Montes said that losing her job of 16 years last year was tough. But she also decided that someone needed to challenge the company about how it treated employees.

She has since found a job with a Lathrop company that processes worker compensation claims, but she said she will take back her old job — this time with support from the local Teamsters union — as soon as the company complies with the federal order.

"I’m ready to go back and make some changes. I’m a fighter," she said. "People need to know they have rights. They need to know they don’t have to be pushed around."
