A Labor Struggle to Watch: Teamster Mechanics vs. United Airlines
United Airlines and other US carriers currently outsource some maintenance work
to companies in Hong Kong and El Salvador. Mechanics in those places make $2 per hr.

United Airlines Mechanics, represented by the Teamsters, make around $28 per hr. plus
a benefits package that includes Health Ins. They have just rejected a tentative
contract
which would have raised wages to well into the thirty dollar range with an
improved benefits package. Also included would have been improved contract language
which wouldn't translate directly into wages.

Rejection of the contract now places the parties before a federal mediator from the
National Mediation Board (NMB).
