June 28

Birthday of machinist Matthew Maguire, who many believe first suggested Labor Day. Others believe it was Peter McGuire, a carpenter - 1850

President Grover Cleveland signs legislation declaring Labor Day an official U.S. holiday - 1894

June 28, 1911 - The Building Trades Council of Minneapolis was founded, with a membership of 18 local building craft unions. The council’s motto is “We must hang together or hang separately.”

June 28, 1969 - A police raid of the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in New York City, turned violent as patrons and local sympathizers began rioting against the police. New York’s gay community had grown weary of the police department’s targeting of gay clubs and the protest soon expanding into neighboring streets. The Stonewall Riot was followed by several days of demonstrations in New York, and was the impetus for the formation of the Gay Liberation Front among other gay, lesbian, and bisexual civil rights organizations.

The federal government sues the Teamsters to force reforms on the union, the nation's largest. The following March, the government and the union sign a consent decree requiring direct election of the union's president and creation of an Independent Review Board - 1988
