An employee for the Wakulla County Public Works Department died Friday morning after being crushed by a tractor in a work-related incident.

Aubrey W. Lawhon, 65, and a pedestrian attempted to jump-start a county-owned tractor about 10 a.m. on Wakulla Aaron Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Ben Pingree, the Wakulla County administrator, said investigators believe Lawhon was under the hood of the tractor when the engine started.

"I don't know what he was doing but he didn't realize it was in gear," he said.

The rear wheels ran over Lawhon and the tractor continued forward and hit an unoccupied 2000 Chevy pickup truck.
