Hearings Scheduled For Lucent Retirees’ Lawsuits

The U.S. District Court Judge presiding over the Lucent retirees’
lawsuit charging that Lucent failed to maintain health care
benefits for retired employees has scheduled a hearing for Friday,
February 22, 2008 on both the plaintiffs’ and Lucent’s motions
for summary judgment. The hearing will begin at 9:30 a.m. in
courtroom 4A in the Dr. Martin Luther King Federal Building,
at 50 Walnut Street in Newark, NJ. This is the new U.S. courthouse
building across the street from the old courthouse and post office.
The new U.S. courthouse is one short block in from the corner of
Broad and Walnut Streets in Newark. The main entrance is on
the side on Walnut Street. For directions
go to: http://www.njd.uscourts.gov/dir/dirNewark.html

It would be good to have a strong turnout of retirees and spouses
for the hearing. If you will be able to attend the hearing, please
notify Pat Smith, LRO Northeast Regional Director, by 5:00 p.m.
Tuesday, February 20. She will notify the attorney for the Lucent
retirees about how many Lucent retirees and spouses will attend
so he can alert the judge. If you plan to attend, please send Pat
an email at patriciaa_2@yahoo.com (patriciaa_2@yahoo.com)
or call 908-889-5757 and leave a message with your name and
phone number if Pat is not available.

In the Death Benefit case, the LRO has learned that the oral
arguments in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia
(6th and Market Streets) is tentatively set for the morning of
Wednesday, April 16, 2008. This date could shift to another date
during that week. A good turnout of retirees and spouses for this
hearing also will be important. The LRO will provide more details
as the date approaches.
