Steelworkers Strike Maker of Coca-Cola Cans Over Unfair Labor Practices

By Doug Cunningham

: "Spirits are good, morale is high, the solidarity is good. The members are fully supporting the strike. We're confident we're going to have a successful outcome."

The United Steelworker's Gerald Dickey describing an unfair labor practices strike by 900 workers at Rexam Beverage Can. Dickey says Rexam, maker of cans for Coca-Cola and Anheuser-Busch, is violating labor law.

: "The company has made repeated violations of labor law. I can't identify specific cases at this point because we are still gathering information evidence. And we don't want to make the nature of the charges public until the charges have been filed. And we expect that to happen hopefully this week."

The Rexam labor contract with the USW expired in February. The company is trying to force workers to pay more for health care benefits.

: "Rexam is a very profitable company and they just expect our members - their employees - to shoulder far too much of the burden of health care costs for active employees and future retirees. The members have made it clear to us - loud and clear - that this is unacceptable."
