Labor Council Protests Circuit City
They didn't work there, but some local union workers are outraged by Circuit City's decision to fire more than 3 thousand employees because they made too much money. Today they were at local Circuit City stores trying to get the attention of shoppers. WFMZ's Brittany Westbrook has more. Gregg POtter: 6:28 I saw it quarter to six in the morning on the 28th it made me sick to my stomach >>Reporter: Gregg potter is president of the Lehigh Valley Council of Labor and he says that sick feeling came from finding out that Circuit City had fired 3400 employees because they made too much money. >>5:49 Its absolutely ludicrous it hits at the heart of the labor movement >>Reporter: All of the workers who gathered in protest at Circuit City stores in Whitehall and Easton agree. None of them are circuit city employees, but they are bothered by the companys actions and want Circuit City customers to know it. >>nat of guy passing flier >>Peter Schweyer: 13:00 Their actions when they decided to do that are reprehensible and anti-american >>Jeffrey Fisher: 17:43 I cant survive on what their paying people and theyre firing them because they make too much >>Reporter: They say they arent calling for a boycott but are calling on customers to think twice about where they spend their money. >>:56 when they go in to make purchases at circuit city, think first about what the ceos are making they make a good wage under contract >>Reporter: Potter says he fears if the public says nothing other companies will follow Circuit Citys lead. So, hes also hoping lawmakers take notice. >>6:08 Its estimated that over 60 percent of employes would unionize if they could, unfortunately the laws right now heavily favor industry and big business and were trying to level the playing field. >>Brittany Westbrook, 69 news. Circuit City did give the fired employees an opportunity to reapply for their jobs at a lesser hourly rate. 69 News called the company's corporate office for comment, but got no response.
