Northwest Airlines flight attendants renew impasse request

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- Negotiations were set to resume Thursday between Northwest Airlines Corp. and its flight attendants, their union said.

Flight attendants are working under pay cuts and new work rules imposed as part of Northwest's bankruptcy restructuring. They are the only union that hasn't accepted a pay-cut deal, but court orders have kept them from striking over the pay cuts.

This week they renewed their request that the National Mediation Board declare their talks at an impasse. If the board had agreed, it would have had the effect of restoring the flight attendants' right to strike. Instead, the board denied the impasse and scheduled the new talks, the Association of Flight Attendants said Wednesday.

Northwest, which is Michigan's biggest passenger air carrier, has said it expects to exit bankruptcy protection by the end of June.
